Advocacy Links

Mountain bike advocacy holds the promise of narrowing the gap which has existed between mountain bikers and other trail users.   The advocacy program of the Mountain Bike Committee should, over time, improve the degree of trust and cooperation between the two groups.

Program Descriptions

Sierra Club Advocacy

The first advocacy goal is to improve the image of mountain bikers within the Sierra Club.  This activity is expected to encounter resistance from hikers who object to other users on “their” trails.

Mountain Bike Advocacy
A second goal is to improve the image of the Sierra Club within mountain bike community.  This will require establishing a Club presence in the mountain bike community, developing trust by showing respect for their needs, and providing reliable information on issues of mutual interest.

Information Exchange
The third advocacy goal is to screen information sources for accuracy and fair play.  This activity will take the form of periodic review of web sites, emails, handouts, and mailings to see that information is presented with journalistic accuracy and doesn’t portray the Sierra Club (or the mountain bikers) as “bad guys,” as has happened in the past.
