Leadership Training Committee
Courses
LTC offers training throughout the year for aspiring Sierra Club leaders and others wishing to improve their skills. We also promote relevant opportunities provided by other groups. We sponsor a seminar required for all leader candidates as well as training in first aid, navigation, rock and snow.
Through our Advanced Mountaineering Program (AMP), we offer training both for candidates seeking the Angeles Chapter's advanced "M" and "E" ratings and to leaders who already have earned these ratings and want to catch up on the latest techniques.
Candidates can get required environmental awareness training through outings sponsored throughout the year by the Natural Sciences Section.
You can learn and practice your skills at any LTC event. Checkoffs, offered throughout the year, give prospective leaders the chance to advance to higher ratings. Bookmark this site and check back frequently for new events.
Contact leaders in advance by email or U.S. mail. Email addresses are listed for each event; postal addresses are in the Schedule of Activities. Fees are required for some activities.
After earning your rating, you need to keep your knowledge of Club policies and first aid up to date by renewing your training every four years. Click on the "Keep Your Rating Current" link at left for the latest on Club policies. For first aid refreshers, one source is the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles.
Candidates should keep track of their progress. They also should inform LTC Administrative Chair Bob Draney upon completion of each requirement for their leadership rating. For detailed requirements, please consult the Leader's Reference Book.
You can sort LTC activities by date or by category by clicking on the blue "Date" or "Activity" bars below. Our main categories are "AMP" (Advanced Mountaineering Program), First Aid, Navigation, Rock and Snow. Scroll through the schedule using the scroll bar immediately to the right of the "Links" column, not the main scroll bar in your browser. Click on a hyperlinked activity to see more details, including contact information for the leader.
