LTC MEMORANDUM Date: July 18, 2000 From: Dan Richter, LTC Chair To: LTC Technical Chairs, LTC Examiners and Angeles Chapter Leader Candidates, Leaders and other Sierra Club Members Re: LTC Policy 1. The LTC IS NOT teaching "Guide/Client" techniques. The professional consultants we have engaged are aware of the nature of the groups they are working with and adjust the curricula accordingly. 2. The LTC IS teaching contemporary techniques, some of which are the natural improvements on older techniques that have been found to be less safe, efficient or just more complicated and time consuming. 3. The LTC IS AWARE that it's leaders will be liable should litigation arise from incidents on their trips. The courts will not regard a leader as one of a group of peers. Outing leaders will be expected to understand and provide a minimum standard of care. This has been evidenced in past cases. Understanding this, the LTC will make every effort to provide the leaders it trains with current and accepted techniques that will not put them in jeopardy should they have to be involved in litigation. 4. The LTC IS NOT teaching confusing techniques. Any older leader who feels they are confused should take part in LTC workshops or classes, read contemporary literature, or take advantage of the many classes provided by AMGA instructors in the LA area. 5. All LTC MATERIAL WILL BE reviewed by the Angeles Safety Committee as well as the LTC professional AMGA consultants, John Long (rock), Jeff Lowe (snow), and John Fisher (alpine). 6. The LTC HAS EXCELLENT and devoted technical chairs who are working hard to provide our potential leaders and leaders with the very best tools to lead safe and enjoyable trips. I encourage all of you to help them in every way you can. Dan Richter Leadership Training Committee Chair Return to the announcements page RETURN TO THE LTC's MAIN PAGE |
