ACTIVITIES REQUIREMENTS

TRANSPORTATION
In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make voluntary carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.

MOUNTAINEERING RESTRICTIONS
Outings requiring the use of ice axes or ropes/climbing gear may be conducted under restrictive circumstances. Such trips require special leader screening and trip plan approval, both at the Chapter and National levels. The Lower Peaks Committee does not currently sponsor trips of this type.

RULES OF CONDUCT
In order to assure the well-being of all; preserve natural beauty and living things; maintain good will toward the Sierra Club and its objectives the following Rules apply to all persons joining Sierra Club activities. Conduct must, at all times, be acceptable to the group itself, to the general public, and to officials with whom the group may come in contact.

The authority of the leaders is to be recognized. Never precede hike leader; never leave group without leader's permission; abide by leader's rulings as to adequacy of clothing, foot-wear, equipment, proficiency, experience, etc.

Obey all fire, sanitary, administrative, and safety regulations of both the Club and governmental agencies. Don't throw rocks. Bring out all unburned litter. Take only photographs; leave only footprints. On trails, don't cut switchbacks as the practice leads to erosions.

All cooking on overnight trips will be done on stoves. One campfire is permitted where firewood is not in short supply.

Firearms and use of radios (except for essential uses such as navigation or communication) are prohibited. Animals are prohibited unless a specific exception is included in the original trip writeup.

Persons less than 18 yrs old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or have written permission from same giving phone number and authorization for continuing treatment by an Medical Doctor in case of necessity.

Events are open to all members and guests unless the event description lists special restrictions. Make sure you understand these restrictions as they apply to your qualifications to participate be sure you are qualified to participate and that you will not handicap the group because the activity is too strenuous for you. The privilege to attend outings and other events may be limited or withdrawn from those who willfully and/or repeatedly do not comply with the Rules of Conduct.

The Chapter Safety Committee has established classifications for outings that involve different levels and areas of skill but do not relate to the strenuousness of the outing.

C For events under external control of a non-Sierra Club entity (e.g., ranger, concessionaire).
O Applies to uncomplicated outings such as hikes on trails or equivalent.
I Includes outings involving off-trail travel that require navigational skills.
M Applies to outings that include moderate snow climbs and/or class 3 rock climbing.
E Applies to outings that involve more severe snow climbing.
T Applies to outings that involve specialized technical activities.

This is a list of Lower Peaks Committee sponsored archived outings that have been published in the Angeles Chapter Schedule of Activities. To participate in a trip, follow the directions in the trip description. For some outings you may be required to send an sase (self addressed, stamped, envelope) to the leader. Some leaders will require qualifications or references for difficult or technical trips.

Jan 3 Sat WTC, Lower Peaks
O: Temescal Peak(2126'): 8 mi rt, 1100' gain on fire road and trail. Learn about the Wilderness Travel Course on this hike through oak glens and chaparral in Topanga State Park. Info will be provided on the ten essentials of safe mountain travel. We will hike to the park's highest peak with spectacular views. Meet 9 am at Trippet Ranch fee parking lot (from Topanga Cyn Blvd, E on Entrada Dr for 1 mi, turning L at every opportunity until parking lot). Ldrs: Robert Myers, Jane Simpson

O: Bedford Peak(3820'): A good prep for WTC students who aren't sure where they stand physically, here's your chance to find out before your scheduled Conditioning Hike Test hike. 7 mi rt, 2000' gain, the hike is challenging, consistently uphill, led at a moderate pace and climaxing with unobstructed views of Mt. Baldy, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto peaks. Meet 7:30 am at the parking turnaround at the end of Silverado Cyn. Bring 2 qts water, snacks, extra clothing layers. Ldr: Edd Ruskowitz. O: Tue Conditioned Hikers/Backbone Trail-Tri-Peaks-Sandstone Pk:: Strenuous 10 mi rt, 2500' gain hike on scenic Boney Mtn. trails. Meet 8 am Malibu rideshare pt or 8:45 am Mishe Mokwa trailhead(PCH 16 mi W of Malibu Cyn Rd, Yerba Buena Rd N 7 winding mi to parking area on R side of road 2 mi past ranger station). Jan 8 Thur Lower Peaks
O: Cachuma Mtn(4696'), Montecito Peak(3214'): These two Lower Peaks in the Los Padres NF provide great views. Cachuma is 6 mi rt, 1600' gain. Montecito from the north is an easy 2 mi rt. We estimate about 6 hrs of hiking and 2 hrs of driving between peaks. Ldrs: Ingeborg Prochazka and Dave Comerzan
Jan 10 Sat Wilderness Adventures, Lower Peaks
O: Jones Pk(3375'), Hastings Peak(4163'), Mt. Yale(4780'): 13 mi rt, 4200' gain. Strenuous hike at a moderate pace via Bailey Cyn Trail, return via Manzanita Ridge and Mt Wilson Trail. Short car shuttle. Meet 8 am Bailey Cyn Park in Sierra Madre (exit I-210 at Baldwin, N to end, W on Carter to end). Bring 3-4 qts water, lunch, lugsoles. Rain cancels. Ldr: Maryann Meggelin. O: Potato Mtn(3420'), Stoddard Pk(4624'): 6 mi rt, 800' gain. Join us for these two Lower Peaks just north of Claremont. Potato (or is it Potatoe?) is 2 mi rt, 1000' gain up Evey Cyn. A short drive up Mt Baldy road brings us to Stoddard. Ldr: Maryann Meggelin. Asst Ldr: Brent Costello

O: Silverado to Bedford Pk(3820'): 6 mi rt, 1800' gain. The fastest hiking route from an OC trailhead to a peak on the Santa Ana ridgeline between Orange and Riverside counties. Great view N to the snow-capped San Gabriel, San Bernardino and San Jacinto ranges. Meet 10 am at the USFS parking lot at the end of the pavement on Silverado Cyn Rd(exit 55 Fwy in Orange at Chapman, go E on Chapman, which turns into Santiago Cyn Rd. for 10.6 mi, L onto Silverado Cyn Rd [also called Maple Springs Rd] for 5.6 mi to the gate at the end of the pavement). O: Rocky Peak(2714')Santa Susanna Mtns: Stretch your legs before the Super Bowl on this moderately-paced 8 mi, 1800' gain hike amongst 65 million year old sandstone outcroppings. Meet 8 am at trailhead (from 118 Fwy in Simi Vly, exit on Yosemite Ave, head N 1/2 mile to Flanagan Dr, turn R drive 3/4 mi to end and park). Bring water, snack, sturdy shoes, jacket. O: Moderate Easy Pace Hikers/Rocky Peak(2714'): Moderately paced 6 mi, 1100' gain hike in Santa Susanna Mtns to Rocky Peak, primarily on fire road through dramatic sandstone rock formations, coastal sage scrub and chapparal with great views os Simi and San Fernando Valleys. O: Echo Mtn(3207')President's Day Brunch: Celebrate President's Day with a conditioning hike, a little history, and a potluck brunch! Join us for a morning hike (5 mi rt, 1400') up to the historic ruins of the Echo Mountain House hotel, where we'll enjoy brunch and explore the ruins. Mission Point is 5 mi rt, 1200' gain, follows an old road to the top with great views. After a short drive, we will hike Rocky Peak, 6 mi rt, 1700' gain. This is a road walk to a rocky summit. Meet 8:30 am outside gate to Indian Oaks residential area(from N end of Topanga Cyn Blvd in Chatsworth, just N of 118 Fwy exti, make L on to Peoma Place, continue 0.2 mi and park along curb outside gate). Mar 21-22 Sat-Sun Lower Peaks, Hundred Peaks
O: Silver Peak(1804')on Catalina Island: 12 miles round trip from Two Harbors, 2300' gain to the peak, 500' gain on return. Enjoy spectacular views of ocean and Catalina's coves. Help celebrate Diana/Jorge Estrada's and Laura Franciosi's Lower Peaks List Finish. Plan to spend the weekend on the island. We will hike Silver on Saturday, party some more in the evening and do a nice leisurely hike on Sunday before boating back home. You can camp, rent a heated cabin, a cabin tent, or stay in a bed and breakfast. Cabins and cabin tents have been reserved and must be moved to your name by January 20th. O: Nordhoff Peak (4485'):Moderate/strenuous hike. 14 miles round trip, 3100' gain, 7 1/2 hours. Join me on a hike to this lookout tower on Nordhoff Peak. Our pace will be easy/moderate so we can enjoy the surroundings. We will hike up "Gridley Canyon Trail" on established trail/road. It will be a steady accent, going by Gridley Springs. May 19-20 Tue-Wed Lower Peaks, Hundred Peaks
O: El Montanon(1808'): Join us on a great hike on Santa Cruz Island. We will take the morning boat out of Ventura Harbor to the island and hike the peak the first day. 5 mi, 1800' gain. We will spend the night at the campground. Next day we will do whatever catches our fancy, and then take the late afternoon boat back. With luck, we may see some whales and dolphins. Jun 23-24 Tue-Wed Lower Peaks, Hundred Peaks
O: Silver Peak(1823'): Twenty-six miles across the sea-Catalina Island calls to me(and you). We will take the ferry from San Pedro to either Avalon or Two Harbors. Those going to Avalon will take the shuttle to the airport, then hike down to Two Harbors campground, 8 mi downhill. Those going to Two Harbors will meet us at the campground. On Fri, all of us will get an early start for Silver. We will hike Silver and there are several options for the return to Two Harbors depending on time and hikers' energy. Silver is 6 mi, 1800' gain. Oct 24 Saturday Lower Peaks/Meeting

O: Mt. Hollywood (1625’): 3 mi rt, 650’ gain. This hike will be part of our semi annual meeting, and we plan to have the meeting during lunch at the Griffith Park Ranger Station after the hike. For the hike, please meet at 9 AM at the Griffith Park Observatory parking lot, near the front entrance. Non-hikers can meet us at the ranger station picnic tables around 11:30 AM.  Leaders: Ingeborg Prochazka, Michael Gosnell.

Nov 10 Tue Lower Peaks

O: Mendenhall Pk (4630’):  12 mi rt, 2050’ gain. This Lower Peak hike in the San Gabriel Mountains is mostly on a fire road, except for a steep ridge near the summit. We shall take a slow pace and enjoy our hike.  Contact leaders a few days before. Leaders: Dave Comerzan, Ingeborg Prochazka.

Nov 14 Sat Lower Peaks

O: San Vicente Mtn.(1965'),Temescal Peak(2,126'):  Easy paced 11.5 miles RT, 561’ gain.  We will check out the Old Nike Missile Base at San Vicente, bag Gizmo Peak and continue along the dirt Mulholland  to Temescal Peak.  Meet 8:00 AM West LA rideshare.  Rain/fire cancels. Bring lug soles, water, binoculars, snack, and appropriate layers . Nov 24 Tue Lower Peaks

O:  Aqua Tiba (4779’):  Long strenusous hike of this Lower Peak.  11 miles SE of Temecula, it is 17 miles r.t., 3200’ gain on trail and last ¼ mile cross country through bush.  Pace is moderate to slow.  Contact leaders for details.  Leaders:  Dave Comerzan, Lloyd Johnson.

Dec 1 Tue Lower Peaks

O:  Mt. Bliss (3720’):  10 mi rt, 3000’ gain.  This is a Lower Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Duarte. The hike is on the Van Tassel fire road, ending at a use trail near the summit.  Please contact the leaders for meeting time and place.  Leaders: Dave Comerzan, Ingeborg Prochazka.

O:  Santa Paula  (4957’):  Located t miles NNE of Santa Paula, Ventura County.  12 miles round trip, 4000’ gain on trail.  Possible alternate route from the city of Santa Paula.  Pace is moderate to slow.  Contact leaders for details.  Leaders:  Dave Comerzan, Lloyd Johnson.

O: Mishe Mokwa Trail Loop and Sandstone Pk: : Highest peak in the Santa Monica Mtns with stunning ocean and canyon views. 7 mi, 1100' gain, moderate to strenuous, 6 hours. Starting from the Sandstone Pk trailhead, we'll go to the Mishe Mowka Connector. Taking the Misha Mowka Trail past Echo Cliffs (rock climbers in view) and Balanced Rock, we'll stop at Split Rock for a snack and continue on to the Backbone Trail. We'll see the ocean and Channel Islands from Inspiration Pt and on to Sandstone Pk for lunch, which is a short hike from the trailhead. Descend 1 mi, 1100' back to trailhead. Meet 9 am (from PCH turn inland at Yerba Buena Rd 5 mi to Circle X Park headquarters on R, continue 1 mi to signed Mishe Mowka Trailhead on L-lots of parking; or from Valley take 101, exit Westlake Blvd to Mulholland Hwy to Little Sycamore Cyn Rd, which turns into Yerba Buena Rd). O: Mugu Pk-La Jolla Valley: A comprehensive trek through the western quadrant of Pt Mugu State park. The hike begins in La Jolla Cyn, then crosses a field to ascend Mugu Pk. The trail then descend into La Jolla Valley, a large grassy meadow, and then joins up with a well graded and scenic trek along the ridge dividing La Jolla Cyn and Big Sycamore Cyn. Curving down the rounded slopes east of La Jolla Cyn, the trail takes in sweeping views of the Pt Mugu Coastline and the distant Channel Islands. 10 mi rt, 2000'gain. Meet 9:30 am parking area for Ray Miller Trailhead (N on PCH 35 mi past Santa Monica, take 1st turnoff to R after passing Big Sycamore Campground and the great sand dune; $4 parking fee). Jan 26, Sat Orange County/Lower Peaks
Chino Hills State Park: Join us for an 8 mi, 1000; gain hike through the local state park. We will follow S Ridge Trail to the cutoff, where we will charge up San Juan Hill. Following this challenge (it's pretty easy, really) we will proceed to 4 Corners and back via Telegraph Cyn. Meet 9 am Orange County entrance on Rim Crest in Yorba Linda. O: Cerro Alto(2624'), Valencia Peak(1345'), Bishop Peak(1559'), Gaviota Peak(2458'): Hike these peaks near Morro Bay and Santa Maria. To avoid a lot of driving, we will do them in two days with an overnight stay in Santa Maria. Cerro Alto is 5 miles with 1,600' gain, Valencia is 4 miles with 1300' gain, Bishop is 3 miles and 1000' gain, and Gaviota is 6 miles with 2100' gain. We'll hike the first two on the first day.
