Long Beach Group - True Cost of Food

Overview

From the Sierra Club TCOF site (see link below): True Cost of Food
"The Sierra Club Sustainable Consumption Committee Mission: To encourage people to think about the environmental impacts of their consumption choices by providing specific information."

The Long Beach Group has a local True Cost of Food Committee championed by Mary Papavasiliou. This committee is dedicated to educating local residents about the mission of the True Cost of Food campaign and the benefits that a sustainable consumption lifestyle has in terms of personal health and environmental impact.

Our local TCOF committee occasionally organizes luncheons at local restaurants to promote a vegetarian diet. These events are/will be listed below. See what events are coming up and consider joining us. Also, check out our TCOF Yahoo Group site and sign up for e-mail notifications of TCOF activites and news.

Some solutions (from the National TCOF site):

Eat more vegetables, fruit, and grains and less meat.

Look for meat that is produced in the least harmful way-grass fed, organic, antibiotic- and hormone-free.

Buy organic whenever you can.

Buy from small, local sources whenever you can.

Links

The Sierra Club's National True Cost of Food web site has multiple links and lots of information.

Find LA County Farmers Markets...

The farmers markets in Long Beach are hosted by the Harbor Area Farmers Markets organization. Visit their website for locations, times, and other information such as what's in season.

Farmer.net is set up to identify Certified Farmer's Markets in Southern California.

One of my favorite sites, Experience LA, has a listing of local area farmer's markets. If you visit this site, spend some time seeing what other information is available, such as it's metro adventures section.

Find Orange County Farmer's Markets...

Orange County.net lists lots of things to do in OC, including a listing of their farmer's markets.

Local sources for organic food...

Beyond the farmer's markets listed above, check out Long Beach Organic's site for information on local, organic, community gardens and organic gardening workshops.
