Outings


Outings Ratings:

"O" Level applies to a variety of uncomplicated outings (i.e. city walks, bike rides, trail hikes, backpacking.) May involve simple off trail hiking not requiring navigation skills. Climbing level: "Class 1" terrain.

"I" Level includes outings that involve cross-country travel where navigation is necessary. Rougher ground than "O" outings may be traversed, and the use of hands for balance may be necessary. Includes outings that have snow travel or skiing on easy terrain. Climbing level: "Class 2" terrain.

"M"Level includes moderate level climbing: "Class 3" terrain. On rock, the hands are used for climbing. Some participants may want a safety belay. On snow, safety dictates the use of axes and the ability to self-arrest.


Long Beach Rideshare Point -- North side of E. Atherton St, between Fanwood Ave and N. Britton Dr. (Across from the Recycling Center, next to Gant Elementary School). This location is available on Sat and Sun only.


Notes:

The Rules of Conduct apply to all persons participating in outings activities of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. Violation of these rules may result in removal of a participant from a particular outing and/or revocation of the privilege to participate in future outings.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.

You might want to consider participating in our conditioning hikes prior to participating in any outing.

NOV 2 WED MONTHLY MEETING: HONEYBEE 101. Bill Walter, founder and Head Beekeeper of Guerilla Beekeepers will completely change the way you think about bees. Find out why these workhorses of nature are so closely linked to human civilization (1/3 of our food relies on bees for pollination), and what you can do to bring bees back from the brink as more colonies around the world battle Colony Collapse Disorder. Presentation includes safe live demonstration of bees. Meet 7:30 pm Environmental Services Bureau, 2929 East Willow, near Temple in Long Beach.E, C

NOV 12 SAT O: BRIDGE TO NOWHERE. This easy 11 mile rt hike winds along the east fork of the San Gabriel River, passing through woods, across the rocky river bed, and through a narrowing canyon before reaching a highway bridge in the wilderness. We'll have lunch here, watching as bungee jumpers hurl themselves into the 130-ft abyss. We'll cross the river several times, so a change of socks is recommended. With minimal elevation gain, this a great hike for beginners. Well-behaved K9s on leash welcome. Adventure Pass required. Meet at Long Beach rideshare at 7 am. NOV 19 SAT [FOREST COMM/HUNDRED PEAKS SECTION/CRESCENTA VALLEY] O: CENTENNIAL TRAILS RESTORATION IN ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST.
(Location dependent on hillside conditions) Commemorate Angeles Chapter Centennial by joining the Forest Committee’s San Gabriels Trail Crew to help restore and maintain parts of the 500+ mile trail system in the Angeles National Forest. Tools and instructions provided. Boots, gloves, long- sleeved shirts, and pants mandatory. Hiking distances vary. Events typically run 9 am to 3 pm. Bring lots of water, lunch, safety glasses if you have them, and enthusiasm to work as little or as much as you want. NOV 20 SUN [WTC, 20s30s SINGLES, LB GROUP] O: WTC INTRODUCTORY HIKE: ECHO MTN, INSPIRATION POINT AND MUIR PEAK (4688’). Hike the Sam Merrill Trail to the historic railway and resort area at Echo Mtn, then up Castle Canyon to Inspiration Point and on to Muir Peak. We will return by the Middle Merrill trail. Trip is a total of 12 miles with 2900 ft of gain. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), which begins January ’12. Subjects include safe mountain travel, map & compass and wilderness first aid. Meet 9:00 am at the North end of Lake Street at the corner of Lake and Loma Alta Street in Alta Dena by the “Gate”. This is a residential neighborhood so be mindful of parking regulations and resident’s quiet enjoyment of their neighborhood. Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch, lug soles, hat and layered clothing. NOV 26 FRI O: DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING HIKE – JONES PEAK (3375'). Join us as we burn off some "festivities" on this day after Thanksgiving on this 6.5-mile 2500 ft gain hike. We'll ascend via Old Mt. Wilson Trail and descend via Bailey Canyon trail. It's a loop that will end with a stroll through the neighborhoods of Sierra Madre. Pack light and be prepared for a moderate pace with few stops. Meet 8 am at the Long Beach rideshare or 9 am at the Old Wilson Trailhead in Sierra Madre. Bring: snack, hat, sunscreen, and 2L water. Rain Cancels. Ldrs: TODD WILLIAMS, MARIEL SIPMAN.E

DEC 3 SAT [LB, WTC] O: Mt. San Antonio (10,064'): Enjoy a moderately-paced hike of Mt. Baldy via ski hut trail, 9 miles round trip, 3800' gain. Look for deer, bighorn sheep. Meet 6:30 am at Long Beach rideshare point with minimum 2 liters water, lunch, lugsoled hiking boots, hat, USFS parking permit, $$ for pizza afterwards. Heavy rain or forest closure cancels. DEC 7 WED MONTHLY MEETING: OUT OF THE WILD AND INTO YOUR GARDEN. Tracy Drake, Manager and Naturalist at the Madrona Marsh Preserve in the City of Torrance, is a much sought after expert on Southern California native flora and fauna. She'll talk about her work at the Madrona Marsh and how you can bring beautiful, colorful, fragrant and even edible native plants, flowers and shrubs into your own garden, and in the process cut your water bills, create local wildlife habitat, and restore our unique Southern CA native landscape.
