Outings Ratings:
"O" Level applies to a variety of uncomplicated outings (i.e. city walks, bike rides, trail hikes, backpacking.) May involve simple off trail hiking not requiring navigation skills. Climbing level: "Class 1" terrain.
"I" Level includes outings that involve cross-country travel where navigation is necessary. Rougher ground than "O" outings may be traversed, and the use of hands for balance may be necessary. Includes outings that have snow travel or skiing on easy terrain. Climbing level: "Class 2" terrain.
"M"Level includes moderate level climbing: "Class 3" terrain. On rock, the hands are used for climbing. Some participants may want a safety belay. On snow, safety dictates the use of axes and the ability to self-arrest.
Long Beach Rideshare Point -- Atherton St. at Fanwood/Meriam Way Signal. Go South on Meriam Way, take the first right and park down by the recycling center. This lot is free on Sat, Sun only.
Pomona Rideshare Point -- Towne Ave. exit from San Bernardino Freeway (I-10), South 1/2 block, park along curb.
La Canada Rideshare Point -- Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy. 2), Just North of Foothill Freeway (I-210). Park on Angeles Crest Highway only.

The Rules of Conduct apply to all persons participating in outings activities of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. Violation of these rules may result in removal of a participant from a particular outing and/or revocation of the privilege to participate in future outings.
All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver. In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.
You might want to consider participating in our conditioning hikes prior to participating in any outing.

This month we will conduct our annual Chapter Candidate Forum during which you can see, hear, and interact with candidates running for Angeles Chapter offices. We will follow the forum with a special presentation by our very own Michael Milroy. Hike to this popular observation point in the Angeles National Forest, which escaped destruction from the recent fires. Enjoy great views of the city and mountains. Expect to survey the extent of the fire from this newly reopened trail, comfortable pace, about 11 mi rt, 2900 gain. NOV 4 WED MONTHLY MEETING: THE BLACK HILLS: Visit America’s least known playground with Mike Sappingfield, Sierra Sage outings leader and past ExComm chair. Last year he and Sierra Singles leader, Russ Hansen led a co-sponsored fly-drive exploration of the Black Hills in South Dakota with a group of 20 participants. Mike will present photo highlights of their adventure, including close-up encounters with buffalo, elk, deer, antelope, prairie dogs, wild burros, and a mountain lion. Wonderful photos of Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Devils Tower, The Badlands, Wind Cave and historic town of Deadwood will have you ready to sign up for his repeat trip in 2010! NOV 15 SUN [WTC, 20-30 SINGLES, LB GROUP, PV SOUTHBAY] O: WTC INTRODUCTORY HIKE: Echo Mtn, Inspiration Point and Muir Peak (4688’). Hike the Sam Merrill trail to the historic railway and resort area at Echo Mtn, then up Castle Canyon to Inspiration Point and on to Muir Peak. We will return by the Middle Merrill trail. Trip is a total of 12 miles with 2900 ft of gain. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), which begins January ’09. Subjects include safe mountain travel, map & compass and wilderness first aid. Meet 9:00 am at the North end of Lake Street at the corner of Lake and Alta Loma Street in Alta Dena by the “Gate”. This is a residential neighborhood so be mindful of parking regulations and resident’s quiet enjoyment of their neighborhood. Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch, lugsoles, hat and layered clothing. NOV 21 SAT O: MT. HARWOOD (9,552'), MT. SAN ANTONIO (10,064'), AND WEST BALDY (9,988'): Moderate 8 miles rt, 2,200’ gain via Devil's Backbone with a head start from the ski lift. Meet at Long Beach carpool point at 7:00 am or Mt. Baldy Ski Area Parking Lot at 8:30 am. Bring lugsoles, lunch, and $18 for lift. No adventure pass needed for ski lift parking lot. NOV 27 FRI O: SANTA ROSA PLATEAU ECOLOGICAL PRESERVE: Work off that second piece of pie on this trek around the beautiful Santa Rosa Plateau. Look for wildlife and fall colors on this moderate+ paced hike through rolling oak-studded hills. Conquer the mighty (or nearly so) Monument Hill (2046'). 11 miles, 900 feet of gain. Meet 7am at the Long Beach Rideshare, or 9am at the Visitor Center parking lot. Bring $2 for park use fee, water, lunch, comfortable trail shoes (NO sneakers, trail runners OK), and sun protection. Meet 6:30 am at Long Beach rideshare point or 8 am at trailhead by Manker Flats with minimum 2 liters water, lunch, lugsoles, hat, USFS parking permit, $$ for pizza afterwards. From there, we'll take the fire road the long way around to Eagle Rock, where we'll stop for lunch and take in the beautiful views. We'll return on a more direct route to Trippet Ranch.
