Moderately paced, strenuous over varying terrain from the tram. We will attempt up to 4 peaks, resulting in 10 mi and 3500' gain. The leaders have made this San Jacinto pilgrimage for 10 years. From there, we'll take the fire road the long way around to Eagle Rock, where we'll stop for lunch and take in the beautiful views. We'll return on a more direct route to Trippet Ranch. MAR 2 WED MONTHLY MEETING: BORNEO. Join world travelers Fred Dong and Stephanie Gross on their journeys to Borneo, Land of the Headhunters. They will show you some of the interesting and exotic animals and plants that reside there. You will get to see Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, Silverleaf Monkeys, Redleaf Monkeys, Macaques, Pygmy Elephant, Hornbills, and many other birds, animals, and insects. See some of the beautiful coral reefs, tropical rain forests, and cultural areas of Borneo. You will see some of the interesting flora like the Rafflesia (the worlds largest flower), pitcher plants, and much more. MAR 6 SUN O: VERDUGO ASSAULT—BRAND PARK TO BEAUDRY TRAILHEAD AND BACK. Join us for this assault on the Verdugo Mountains. We'll start in Brand Park and hike straight up a ridge to the Verdugo Motorway. We'll descend to the Beaudry trailhead via Beaudry South Motorway for lunch. We'll then ascend via Beaudry North to the Verdugo Motorway and down to Brand Park via Brand Motorway. Lots of fire road travel with great panoramic views of the LA Basin. 11 miles and 3200 foot gain. Bring snacks, lunch, 3 liters of water, hat, and sunscreen. MAR 12 SAT O: CHAPTER CENTENNIAL OUTING—SPIRIT OF 1911 EASY HIKE – SIERRA MADRE TO BAILEY FALLS. In 1911 many outings originated at the end of the Red Car Line. We won't be starting exactly where the Red Car line ended in Sierra Madre, but we'll be close enough. We'll begin this hike in town at the intersection of Baldwin and Sierra Madre. We'll meander through town at an easy pace to Bailey Canyon Park, then on to Bailey Falls. On the way back, we'll explore the Live Oak Nature Trail and learn about the local flora. Be prepared for stream crossings, wet feet, and a great time on this trek. 4 miles and 600 feet of gain. Bring a snack, 1 liter of water, hat, and sunscreen. WEST SAN GABRIEL RIVER TRIAL. Bring the little ones and join us on
this very easy hike to explore these local treasures. The park is in Lakewood
on the west side of the San Gabriel, the river trail spans the west side of the
river between Carson and Del Amo. We'll explore the park and then travel to
each end of the trail and back. If you have never noticed the park or trail,
then join us and see what you've been missing. Bring a snack and 1 liter of

MAR 26 SAT O:GLEN TRAIL CAMP/WEST FORK SAN GABRIEL RIVER. Easy hike for K9 hikers. Roundtrip is 11 miles with 600 feet of gain. Paved trail for much of the way, which makes this a good dog hike. If the water isn’t too swift, we may boulder hop to the falls, one of the more impressive in the San Gabriels, though not easily reached. Good conditioning hike for dogs and their humans. APR 17 SUN O: SCHERER PARK TO DOMINGUEZ GAP WETLANDS. Join us for a local stroll as we explore Scherer Park, Sleepy Hollow, and the Dominguez Gap wetlands on this easy paced, 4 mile hike (no appreciable elevation gain). We’ll start at the Atlantic end of Scherer Park and cascade our way past the duck pond. We’ll explore Sleepy Hollow as we traverse to the Los Angeles River Channel. Down the channel will bring us to our newest wetland area, the Dominguez Gap wetlands. Our return will take us through the Virginia Country Club neighborhood. JUN 25 SAT O: NAVAL WEAPON STATION SEAL BEACH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE. Learn about our local treasure of a wildlife preserve. Estimated zero elevation gain, total distance about ½ mile. This is a conducted tour by the staff of the Wildlife Refuge with four stations: a short film, a native plant garden, a bird ID station and a discussion about endangered species. Duration: 3 hours or a little less. Because the tour is on an active naval station we must register name and phone number of all participants before the hike. JULY 2-5 SAT-TUES [LONG BEACH, BACKPACKING, 20s30s] O: JULY 4TH WEEKEND YOSEMITE NORTH RIM BUS BACKPACKING TRIP. Leave Sat afternoon for a moderate 3-day trip from Porcupine Flat to see some of the most magnificent vistas from the North Rim of Yosemite National Park. View Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Glacier Point, Yosemite Falls and many more important Yosemite viewpoints from vantages not seen from roads at such points as North Dome, Yosemite Point, and the top of Yosemite Falls, over 3000' above the valley floor. The backpack is 15 mi with 1700' gain/5800' loss from Porcupine Flat to Yosemite Lodge. No beginners. Cost includes bus, all fees, Tue 7/5 dinner. Gain more experience on class 3 rock by climbing Charlton Peak by the mountaineers' route. Fri, comfortably paced trail hike from South Fork to base camp, 6.5 mi, 2600' gain while enjoying our local San Gorgonio Wilderness. Sat, ascend 1600' on Charlton's north side, half of it class 3. Then go on to summit a bonus peak and the two of the highest peaks in Southern California by 3 miles of cross-country and some trail, 2700' total gain for the day. AUG 14 SUN O: CEDAR GLEN COFFEE STROLL. Join us on this Sunday stroll from the parking lot of Ice House Canyon to this pretty location that's a great destination for a morning stroll. At 5.2 mi, 1500' gain, this will be a bit more strenuous than my typical coffee stroll, but if you've been participating in our conditioning hikes, you'll do just fine. Sat. am, hike to the top of Lassen Peak, 5 miles rt, 2000' gain. Sat. pm backpack 5 miles 500' gain/loss to camp at Rainbow Lake. Sun. tour lava beds, painted dunes, and a dormant volcano, 10 miles rt 1600' gain. Pack out Mon. am to return home. No beginners. SEP 4 SUN [OCSS, LONG BEACH GROUP] O: DOMINGUEZ GAP WETLANDS HIKE. During an easy-moderate flat hike of 2-1/2 miles along the Los Angeles River, participants will explore the rich biodiversity of a green oasis teeming with plant and animal life. Co-leader/photographer Diana Lejins will share her knowledge of wetlands flora and fauna. Binoculars recommended for bird watchers. Meet at 4:00 pm at parking lot of The Sizzler, 15 W. SEP 7 WED MONTHLY MEETING: ANNUAL POTLUCK AND NEW MEMBER’S MEETING. Once again, our September Monthly Meeting will be an end of summer potluck and a welcome for new members. Come share your summer and enjoy the adventures of other members. Bring something yummy for 8, and make it vegan as a bid to decrease global warming (encouraged, but not required). Also, bring optional donations of $1 for drinks and common items, $5 if you don’t bring a potluck item, place setting, and up to 15 digital photos from summer adventures. SEP 17 SAT O: MT. BADEN-POWELL (9,399’). Moderate 8 miles RT, 2,800’ gain via Vincent Gap. A historical Boy Scout trail through oak, Jeffrey pine and ancient Limber pines with spectacular all around views. Meet at Long Beach carpool point at 7:00 am or Vincent Gap 9:00 am. SEP 18 SUN [WTC, 20s30s SINGLES, LB GROUP] O: WTC INTRODUCTORY HIKE: ECHO MTN, INSPIRATION POINT AND MUIR PEAK (4688’). Hike the Sam Merrill trail to the historic railway and resort area at Echo Mtn, then up Castle Canyon to Inspiration Point and on to Muir Peak. We will return by the Middle Merrill trail. Trip is a total of 12 miles with 2900 ft of gain. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), which begins January ’12. Subjects include safe mountain travel, map & compass and wilderness first aid. Meet 9:00 am at the North end of Lake Street at the corner of Lake and Loma Alta Drive in Altadena by the “Gate”. This is a residential neighborhood so be mindful of parking regulations and residents’ quiet enjoyment of their neighborhood. Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch, lugsoles, hat and layered clothing. Join HPS Fall Festival party afterward at Keller Hut. WTC students welcome and encouraged! Moderate pace, 8.5 miles, 1600' gain, with naturalizing along the way. OCT 8 SAT O: JOHN'S MEADOW AND APPLE PICKING! Join us on this all day outing filled with hiking and apple picking in the San Bernardino Mountains. We'll first hike from the Forsee Creek trailhead to John's Meadow. This is a beautiful 8-mile (round trip) hike with 900' of elevation gain offering spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains. We'll lunch at the meadow before returning to the trailhead. We'll head back toward Long Beach, stopping on the way to pick apples at Stetson Ranch in Angelus Oaks. This is smack dab in the middle of apple season, so the pickin's should be good! Meet 7am at the Long Beach Rideshare. Bring snack, lunch, hat, sunscreen, and 2 L water. Rain Cancels. OCT 29 SAT O: FISH CANYON NARROWS TO ROGERS CAMP. Hike through a hidden canyon shaded by alder, oak, sycamore and willow past old mines and abandoned camps to a peaceful lunch spot in this hidden corner of the ANF. Moderate, 10.5 mi, 900' gain over varied terrain. Wear lug soles but bring amphibious shoes for the parts of the hike that are IN Fish Creek. Hiking sticks recommended, well-behaved K9s on leash welcome. Meet 6:30am at the Long Beach Rideshare. Adventure Pass required for parking at trailhead.
