JAN 21  Sun            O: Sierra Madre to First Water: Dayhike: Easy hike planned especially for beginners!  Hike the Historic Mount Wilson Trail begun in 1864 to put telescopes on Mount Wilson.  We’ll take this very moderately paced 4 miles round trip, 1000' gain hike up to the scenic oasis of First Water. Mar 3 Sat O: Echo Mountain Moonlight Hike:  Hike up to Echo Mountain via the Chaney Trail. Trail is a paved road for the first 2 miles then about 1/2 mile of dirt trail. Enjoy a great view of the city lights with full moon. 5 miles round trip. 1200 ft. of gain. Bring 2 litres of water, snacks and proper clothing for possible cool weather. MAR 17 SAT            O: El Moro Canyon Conditioning Hike:Join us as we work on our fitness for summer hikes on this moderately paced, limited stops, conditioning hike around El Moro Canyon (Crystal Cove State Park).  This will be an 11 mile, 1200' trek.  We'll set a moderate pace, get our breathing in sync with our motion, and keep that pace constant up and down hills for about an hour before breaking.  Bring 2 liters of water, snacks, hat, and sunscreen, $10 for parking.  Meet 7 am, Long Beach ride share, or 8 am at the Ranger Station. Apr 7   Sat            Event: Spring Water Fair: TheLong Beach Water Department will host the Spring Water Fair at Long Beach City College in conjunction with the LBCC Horticultural program's annual plant sale.  The Water Fair will promote the importance of water conservation, both to maintain the health of our upstream lakes and rivers and to reduce pollution downstream in our coastal environment.  It will encourage the use of California-friendly landscapes that reduce water use and provide valuable habitat for native birds and wildlife.  The LBCC plant sale will feature many California friendly plants at very low prices. A historical boy scout trail through oak, Jeffrey pine and ancient Limber pines with spectacular views. Meet at Long Beach rideshare point at 7:00 am. May 12 SatO: Fish Canyon Falls Easy Hike.4 mile round trip, 600 ft elevation gain to the 80 foot, three-tier waterfalls is one of the best in the San Gabreils, when in season. The sparkling creek dances and bubbles over boulders and is often graced with quite pools. Abundant sycamore, bay, bigleaf maples, alder, willow, and live oak provide refreshing shade in many sections along the trail. Lush ferns, poison oak, and other green plants create a tropical feel.Meet At Long Beach Ride Share At 7:00 A.M. drive to volcan matiriels for a short van pool ride to trial head. May 19 Sat O: Metro Rail to Griffith Observatory and Thai Town. Join us as we ride the Metro rail system on this moderate pace, 4 mile, 900 foot gain trek to Griffith Observatory and Thai town. We’ll ride the trains to Thai Town and hike to Griffith Observatory. Explore the recently remodeled observatory, explore Thai town, and have lunch. Awesome views of the city and mountains await. MAY 20 SUN            O: Mt. San Antonio (10,064') Dayhike. Hike from Mt. Baldy Village to snowline, perhaps to summit. Snow conditions permitting, descend by Devil’s Backbone and the ski lift, with car shuttle. 12 mi, 5700' gain. Moderately-paced, but not for beginners. Meet 5 am at Long Beach rideshare pt or 6 am at Mt. Baldy rideshare pt with minimum 3 liters water, lunch, lugsoles, hat, $8 for ski lift, and $$ for pizza afterwards. Co-Ldrs: JH, Jeff Kenyon. E

MAY 26-28 SAT-MON (WTC) I: Beck Meadow, Kern River, Navigation to various Peaks (9050’ – 9410’).Sat, moderately paced backpack approx9 mi one-way, 1720'gain from the Kennedy Meadows PCT trailhead to Beck Meadow, along the Kern River and Craig Creek. Sunday, x-c navigate to various peaks – potential candidates are Granite Knob (9050’), Monache Mountain (9410’), and Jackass Peak (9300’). JUN 15-17 FRI-SUN     O: Nature Knowledge Workshop. Join the Natural Science Section for a weekend of discovery and enjoyment as you learn about the natural wonders that surround you. Enhance your knowledge about our precious natural resources from professional naturalists who share their expertise in bird and bat identification, reptile, plant, geology and insect studies.  From our streamside camp accommodations in the San Bernardino Mtns. we’ll explore 3 habitats- chaparral, forest and riparian via easy guided walks led by our naturalists. There will be a program Fri night and special interest and hands-on workshops Sat afternoon and evening. All this and hot showers too! LTC credit available. Fee includes 2 nights lodging in dormitory cabins (bring own sleeping bag), 6 full-course meals and instruction. (Tent or car camping available). Reservation deadline June 1. Jun 30Sat            O: BALDY BOWL TRAIL. A somewhat slower than moderate ascent up Mt. San Antonio. Participants should be able to do an approximately 9 mile loop with a 3900 foot elevation gain, and be comfortable hiking at the 8000-10000 foot level. Bring water, lunch, sturdy hiking boots. Sat, comfortably paced trail hike from South Fork to base camp, 6.5 mi, 2600' gain. Sun bag Charlton via class 3 route then hike the others, 2 mi xc, 2300' gain. WTC/equiv. reqd. JUL 20-23 FRI-MON O: White Mountains/Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Car Camp.  LB Group Fundraiser.  See the oldest living trees on earth, ancient silent witnesses to eons of climate change from their home high above the Owens Valley and Great Basin Desert.  Friday arrive, set up camp, and acclimatize at 7400 ft.  Saturday visit the groves, 4 mi, 1000 ft gain at Methuselah, then the shorter trails at Patriarch, 3/4 mi 200 ft gain for both.  Sunday (optional) hike to White Mtn (14,242 ft), 14 mi, 2700 ft gain.  Much dirt road driving to Patriarch and White Mtn TH.  Monday break camp and drive home.  Well behaved K-9s welcome.  E-mail or SASE, & send $15 payable to Sierra Club Long Beach to Ldr: SHARON MOORE,  Asst: JEAN KONOFF. AUG 11-12/SAT-SUN O: Meteor Madness.Come up to the mountains to your cabin and watch the annual Perseid Meteor Shower in the night sky from Keller Peak Ski Hut, located off Highway 18 in the San Bernardino Mtns, elevation 6800 ft.  Bring sleeping bag, own food and stellar item for Star Party Happy Hour Sat night.  A chaise lounge chair is helpful to lay back and watch the sky show!  Local day hiking, exploring or just relaxing around the cozy cabin. SEP 28-30 FRI-SUN I:Tuolumne Meadows to Mattie Lake Backpack. Join the Wilderness Training Committee and the Long Beach Group on this trip departing Tuolumne Meadows (8600') Friday for the Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp (7900’) area, 5 miles with 300' gain and 1000' loss.  Saturday depart Glen Aulin area off trail for Mattie Lake (9200'), 3 miles with 1550' gain and 250' loss, includes walking on slab granite, through scrub brush, bouldering up the outlet notch and meandering in the meadow to the lake, and finally making camp at Mattie Lake.  Optional scramble to Wildcat Point (9562') for a fabulous sunset view.  Sunday return to Tuolumne Meadows the way we came, hiking out all the way.  Trip is limited by permit.  Contact leader Jean Konnoff, . SAT-SUN 13-14 NOV I: Tejon Ranch, Wind Wolves, and Unnamed Peak (~5152' / 322137mE, 3862979mN): Enjoy pine forests and the picturesque high country of our San Emigdio Range and the grasslands of Wind Wolf. We will be immersing ourselves into an environment that is very similar to Tejon Ranch, by staying at the Wild Wolves Preserve. We will be touring the proposed development areas, as well as the highly unique areas within Wind Wolves. Take time to learn from our naturalists about the fauna and flora, and help us plan the next stages in our goal to create a new state or national park. With luck, we will see Eagles, oh Condors. We'll be staying at Wind Wolves for one night, so bring your best potluck items, food and stories. Group size limited to 30. SAT 10 NOV O: PINE (9648’), DAWSON (9575’), and WRIGHT (8505’):Join us on this 14.5 mile, 4600 ft gain hike from Wrightwood to Pine Mtn, Dawson Peak, and finally Wright Mtn up the seldom used Acorn Trail. Although the pace will be moderate, this is still quite a bit of a workout due to the steepness of trail up Pine. The trail and views are quite spectacular.  Group size limited by leader preference. We will return by the Middle Merrill trail. Trip is a total of 12 miles with 2900 ft of gain. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), which begins January ’08.
