Zuma Trancas Canyon hike on Jan 17, 2009

This was an 11 mile, 2800' gain hike up, around, and through Zuma and Trancas canyons in Malibu. Wow, what beautiful views we had! Through the haze we made out 6 of the channel islands, San Jacinto, and even San Gorgonio! The canyons were lush and green, and further up canyon the water was flowing providing a great location for our lunch break. The weather was a bit on the warm side, too warm for most of our preferences, but we managed to survive. All in all, it was a fun outing with a great group of people.

This was a fun hike that seemed shorter than the mileage would suggest. Most of it is on fire and access roads, though they appeared to be lightly used. The ocean views are really spectacular, but even neater was looking across the canyon to see almost the entire route of the hike. You don't get that kind of view very often. If you go, take sunscreen. Most of the hike is in the sun.

We could see most of the Channel islands. The small island we could see north of Catalina is Santa Barbara. It's part of Channel Islands National Park. The flat island on the horizon behind it is San Nicolas. The other island, south of Catalina, is San Clemente. Both of these are owned by the US Navy. San Nicolas is the island where one NicoleƱo Indian woman lived alone for 18 years (until 1853) after she was left behind when her tribe was relocated to the mainland. She is the subject of the novel Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O'Dell.
