International Community SectionConservationElectronic WasteMore than 1.5 million tons of electronic waste, TV's, monitors, computers, cell phones batteries, etc., are thrown into American landfills and incinerators each year. Because of this, the toxins they contain, such as lead and mercury are releaseed into the air and water. It is a huge problem. "An old TV set can contain up to 10 pounds of lead," says Connecticut Rep. Pat Widlitz. The City of Los Angeles has permanent collection centers. They are called S.A.F.E. Centers because the recycle and dispose of Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, and Electronics. Check out their web site. They have collection points in San Pedro, Glendale, Playa del Rey, UCLA and more. Each site has its specific hours of operation. Do not be part of the prolem! |
