Air Quality Violations Reporting

Call +1-800-CUT-SMOG (same as +1-800-288-7664).
If no one answers, leave a message, stating the problem, your name, date/time and phone number.

You can call this number of any apparent air polllution violation, from cars, trucks, other vehicles, refinery flairing, fugitive dust (dust that blows from a construction site), factory emissions, strange outdoor odors (whether you are sure of the source or not).

AMP - Alternative Marine Power - plugs ships into power from electric grid while at dock to avoid using filthy ship engines

Bunker fuel - a high-sulfur fuel oil used in sihps, one of hte dirtiest fuels we use.
CARB - California Air Resources Board.
CEQA - California Environmental Quality Act
CH4 - Methane
CNG - Compressed natural gas, a version of natural gas which is compressed and stored under pressure
CO2 - Carbon dioxide
CTW - Change to Win
Carbon Dioxide - a non-toxic product of burning hydrocarbon fuels which causes global warming
Cunningham Report - and trade newsletter for ports and the shipping industry published in Long Beach
Gerald Demond Bridge - the bridge that joins Terminal Island to downtown Long Beach on the east side of San Pedro Bay.

Henry Ford Bridge - the historic drawbridge that joins Terminal Island to Wilmintton on the north side of San Pedro Bay
Hydrocarbon - an organic molecule made up of chains of one or more carbons with hydrogen loated on the ends or sides of the carbon atoms. Used for energy in the shipping industry.
Hydrocracker - a unit in a refinery that is used in the process of refining crude oil into gasoline and other products.

LNG - Liguified natural gas, a version of supercooled natural gas which is stored cryogenically.
LPG - Liquefied petroleum gas. A heavier than air gas, the heavier cousing to LNG.
Long Beach - The city on the north and east side of San Pedro Bay, a separate city from Los Angeles.
Maersk - Maresk Line, shipping company servicing ports.
Methane - the primary component of natural gas, the shortest and simplest hydrocarbon, CH4, an odorless gas at room temperature. Methane is 10x more global warming than carbon dioxide.
Methane - the shortest chain hydrocarbon (has only one carbon atom and for hydrogens). If released unburned, it's about 10 times more global warming than carbon dioxide and is lighter than the orindary air.
NEPA - National Environmental Protection Act
NG - Natural gas, a fuel which is about 80-95 methane
NOX - Nitrogen oxide
Nitrogen oxide - a toxic and irritating pollutant which is a product of burning hydrocarbon fuels.

Particulates - the fine particles emitted by LNG, CNG and diesel engines that are a health concern. Three types by size: coarse, fine and ultrafine.
Pier 400 - A pier or section of Terminal Is. in San Pedro Bay to which hazardous material bulk cargos were to be moved.

SCAQMD - Southern California Air Quality Management District
SP - San Pedro
San Pedro - - the community on the west side of San Pedro Bay, joined the City of Los Angeles in 1909.
San Pedro Bay - the natural feature where the Los Angeles River enters the Pacific Ocean and home of the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
Sulfur - a contaminent which naturally occurs in crude oil and its products which increases health risks from using fuels.
TI - Terminal Island
Terminal Island - A man-made island in San Pedro Bay that contains shipping terminals, a prison, a coast guard facility and some government offices
ULSD - Ultralow sulfur diesel. A type of diesel fuel that has about 10 parts per million sulfur — 10, 20 or more times less than conventional diesel.
UP - Union Pacific Railroad
Ultrafine particulate- the smallest and most dangerous parituclate emissions from hydrocarbon-fueled engines, including LNG, CNG and diesel.
Vincent Thomas Bridge - The suspension bridge on that joins Terminal Island to San Pedro on the west side of San Pedro Bay.
Wilmington - the community on the north/west side of San Pedro Bay, joined the City of Los Angeles in 1909.
