                     MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
                        Over 5,000 Feet Elevation
                           by Weldon F. Heald

(Revised and corrected to July 1, 1946)

Like everything else in Southern California these days, the
list of named mountains over 5,000 feet, between Tehachapi Pass and the
Mexican line, has expanded and changed since the original "Hundred Peakers'
Official Summits" was compiled several months ago. Nine new summits have
been added, several of doubtful authenticity have been dropped, while
others have changed names. New surveys by the Army and U.S.G.S. alter the
altitudes of 37 peaks; for example, San Jacinto has grown from 10,805 feet
to 10,831 feet. But the peaks are still there, unchanged and waiting to
be climbed. It is only the human element which restlessly zigs and zags
toward some goal unknown even to the wisest among us.

          The Sierra Club "Hundred Peakers'" goal, however, is simple;
understandable to anyone who loves the outdoors and is happiest among
mountains, forests and deserts. The idea being to climb 100 mountain
summits between the Tehachapi and the Mexican line. Recently one of us
went over the top, shaking hands atop his hundredth peak with another
veteran who has chalked up 78. Many other Sierrans have a growing list
of summits gained, ranging from 35 to 82. There is no better way that we
can think of to give us a better appreciation of our mountains or a great-
er knowledge of Southern California than playing the Hundred Peaks Game.

If you are interested, please send us your name and address. We
would like to publish the records of those who have climbed 50 or more
summits in the SOUTHERN SIERRAN from time to time.

The only rules in the Hundred Peaks Game are:

              1. It counts one, if you reach a peak by foot,
horseback, skis, car or levitation, but be
sure you reach the highest summit. For in-
                  stance, Palomar Observatory doesn't count,
for the top of the mountain is 600 feet
higher, a mile and a half distant.

              2. First ascent of a mountain is the only time
it counts; 17 climbs up Baldy counts just
one. Secondary summits do not score; i.e.
lower Twin Peaks is good exercise, but it
does not add to your total.

The attached list of 192 named mountain summits in Southern
California was compiled from the latest U.S.G.S., Forest Service, Army
Engineers, Auto Club and other maps, but in some cases names came from
local sources, trail signs, or crystal ball. Names where authenticity
is in doubt are indicated, but we refuse to be responsible for them, al-
though they are usually summits which should have some name, so we give
them a timid blessing. Where nomenclature is confusing, such as along
the San Bernardino Ridge, we have tried to be logical, but do not guar-
antee we are right in all cases, as our mountains have a habit of changing
and exchanging names without notice.

Check off the peaks you have done, then join us and make it a
hundred. Good Climbing!
