Cannel Point

8314'

Cannel Point, a former HPS peak, is located in Kern County, about 5 miles northeast of Kernville, 210 miles from Los Angeles. It lies within the Sequoia National Forest. Cannel Point was added to the HPS Peak List in 1971 and removed from the List in 2008 due to the long drive to get there. See the Summit Signature for more history and some background about the name of the peak.

Peak Guides
HPS had two current documented routes to the peak. Route 1 was 2 miles cross country, 900' gain, to an interesting Class 2 summit block. Route 2 was a strenuous 24 mile round trip hike, 5500' gain, using the Cannel Meadows Recreational Trail to get in the vicinity the peak, then on up to that interesting summit block. Earlier peak guides (see below) document a route from Fay Ranch Road that was removed due to concerns about crossing private property.

Older Peak Guides (routes may no longer be legal or safe, use caution!): 1973, 1987 and Microsoft Word version from 2003.

Current Conditions
  • This peak is currently not included on the HPS List.
  • Weather Forecast from the National Weather Service
  • Gate status: there are lots of places along this long drive where you might encounter gate, and as the peak is no longer on our List, we don't hear much about what's happening in the back of beyond up there. Usually the gates are open in summer, but to be sure, contact the Kernville Office of the Kern River Ranger District, 760-376-3781.
  • Status of State Route 155 from Caltrans
  • Deer hunting season - "The season in Zone D-8 shall open on the fourth Saturday in September and extend for 30 consecutive days." For more information, visit the California Fish and Game Commission.
  • Sequoia National Forest Incidents (usually fires) from InciWeb
  • Adventure Passes are not currently (2011) required in Sequoia National Forest.
