Carolyn Ramsay for LA City Council District 4

May 2015

Dear Sierra Club Angeles Chapter member in L.A. City Council District 4:

Your City Councilmember will likely affect your quality of life more than any other political office holder. Therefore, it is crucial that you vote in the election on May 19. City Councilmembers can be made to respond to the needs and concerns of their constituents. City Hall is not far away, and councilmembers have offices that are even closer to where we live.

After interviewing eight of the 14 candidates hoping to replace termed-out councilmember Tom LaBonge and then interviewing the two finalists, Carolyn Ramsay and David Ryu, the Sierra Club decided to endorse Carolyn Ramsay. She was councilmember LaBonge's Chief of Staff for six years, but she distinguishes herself from Mr. LaBonge by pointing to her credentials as a long-time environmentalist.

Ramsay has advocated and raised money for more green space in Los Angeles city and county. She founded a non-profit called "Olive Branches," which raised money to convert paved-over school yards to green communal spaces. Ramsay joined early efforts to restore the L.A. River. She was instrumental in securing an additional 138 acres of open space, including Cahuenga Peak, for Griffith Park. She has led tours of drought-tolerant gardens to inspire residents of her neighborhood, and she has removed her own grass lawn. She supports a fracking moratorium for the City of L.A., and she will vote to make Los Angeles a GMO-free zone when this comes up again. Ramsay knows how City Hall works, and she has been endorsed by most L.A. City Councilmembers. Others who endorse Ramsay are Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, Controller Betty Yee, U.S. Representative Janice Hahn, L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl and actor/environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr.

Please vote on May 19, and please vote for our endorsed candidate, Carolyn Ramsay, for L.A. City Council, CD4.

This will be a low turnout election and your vote could make the difference.

Sincerely,

Carol Henning
