As efforts to fight climate change by replacing fossil fuels with solar and other renewables accelerate, the Sierra Club is testing another tactic aimed at catalyzing widespread deployment of clean energy: the Solar Homes Initiative.

Through an innovative partnership with SunRun, a California-based solar service provider, the Sierra Club is able to offer its members and supporters an affordable way to get solar on their rooftops For every home that goes solar through this program, SunRun will give back $1000 to the chapter and the Club's clean energy campaigns It used to be that in order to get solar panels on your home you would have to conduct extensive research, hunt for rebates, obtain a permit and be prepared to fork out $20,000. That was before the one-stop solar shop.

Residential solar companies like SunRun are now offering a 'solar service' for people who can't afford to pay the upfront costs to put panels on their roofs. SunRun will install the panels with no upfront cost, as well as handle all of the maintenance and service. The homeowner pays for clean energy with a small monthly bill which may be less than the household's current energy bill.

'In order to end our dependence on duty energy, we need as many Americans as pos- sible to switch to clean energy like rooftop solar. This is a high priority for Sierra Club We are urging all of our members and supporters in Southern California to work with SunRun to find out if solar is right for them. Every home that goes solar gets us one step closer to our goal of a clean energy economy' said Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune about the program.

The Angles Chapter has long been an incubator of innovative programs and solutions. If this pilot is a success, the Club will aim to get solar energy deployed onto rooftops across the country.

It's a win win-win An average SunRun customer saves 15% on their electricity costs by going solar. The Club and the Angeles Chapter will raise money for important cam- paigns. And more solar will replace coal as Sierra Club members cut their carbon foot- prints and collectively help to scale this key clean energy solution.
