On July 16th, Sierrans from throughout Southern California are invited to spend a relaxing day in Malibu, in a secluded coastal canyon resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Picnic with friends, old and new, in the shade of giant Sycamore trees next to a year-round tranquil stream.

Located in Nicholas Canyon on the eastern flank of Leo Carrillo State Park, our host venue was originally developed in the early 1970's as a recreational Shangri-La that catered to some of Hollywood's most famous celebrities. During the late 1980's and early 1990's the property was slated to become Malibu's largest condominium subdivision which would have destroyed much if not all of the canyon's sylvan beauty. Cooler heads prevailed with the help of two local non-profit land trusts, the Mountains Restoration Trust and the Nature Trust of the Santa Monica Mountains, and now Nicholas Canyon is preserved as a non-profit nature conservancy.

In recognition of the Angeles Chapter's Centennial the entire resort grounds and adjoining nature preserve are being made available to Sierra Club members, family and guests for a daylong celebration of appreciation , recognition and thanks to the Angeles Chapter and its members, past and present. The clubhouse building will be set up as an Angeles Chapter Base Camp Lodge and museum exhibiting chapter archival and private artifacts dating to the Great Hiking Era of the early 1900's. An Angeles Chapter Movie Theatre will be running vintage films from the chapter's early years featuring historic outings and famous leaders form the past. Famed mountaineers and rock climbing pioneers such as Glen Dawson and Royal Robbins will be on hand to take part in the day's festivities. Prominent mountaineer authors will be on hand for book signings.

A delicious BBQ lunch with all the fixings can be shared with friends on the Ocean Deck or one of the shaded Sycamore Groves. Several self guided nature hikes will be offered as well as exhibits of antique camping stoves, vintage backpacking tents will be pitched and on display will be backpacks dating from the early 1900's to the Golden Age of American made backpacks into the 1970's. Come out and celebrate the Angeles Chapter' Centennial!

Admission price is $20.00 per adult and $10.00 for children under 12. Send a self-addresses stamped envelope with your check made out to 'Sierra Club' to Elizabeth Pomeroy, 2111 E. Mountain St., Pasadena, CA 91104-4130. A map to the Malibu Nature Preserve will be included with the tickets.
