Mega-Mine: A Threat Once Again

Santa Clarita once again faces the possibitity of a 56 million ton mega-mine in the community. Located on the east side of Santa Clarita, the damaging effects of air pollution from dust and trucks, traffic congestion on Interstate 5 through Newhall pass (a major north south route) and the possible contamination of the local aquifers make this a priority for the north county groups. The City of Santa Clarita, all local elected officials, and a coalition of environmental and community groups including the Sierra Club, have worked together to stop the mega-mine. Twenty-plus years of fighting against this environmental appeared to be on course for a win win win happy ending when legislation was proposed to stop the mining. Last congressional session, Senator Boxer and Representative McKeon both submitted identical bills to the Senate and the House. Unfortunately even with an environmentally friendly House, and a key Democrat cosigner (Brad Sherman) McKeon was unable to move the bill.
