Angeles Chapter ExComm met on February 27, 2011 at the chapter headquarters. Highlights from the meeting follow:

Political Committee Practices

Carol Henning and Carole Mintzer provided two illuminating handouts; 'Sierra Club Political Endorsement 101,' and 'Endorsing City Council Candidates from Start to Finish' They pointed out the committee's geographical divide: LA County and Orange County and reviewed the committee's endorsement process, stressing that the Club's 'three legs' are Outings, Conservation and Political Activism. Unless there are public office-holders who support our goals, 'both conservation and outings will suffer'.

A top priority in deciding endorsements for Polcomm is the 'propect of winning the election or at least mounting a credible campaign.'

For endorsements, the vote talles are Yes/No/Abstain. We need two-thirds 'yes' to pass AND that the 'yes' votes comprise more than half of total voting members less vacancies and confict of interest votes. All political candidate approvals for local and state elections are forwarded to the state and local Candidate Review Committee; for federal elections, to Sierra Club National, for endorcement; ballot measures go to the Local Ballot Measure Review Committee.
