Suzanne Lummis, granddaughter of C.F. Lummis who is famed for building 'the most beautiful museum in the world', the Southwest Museum, has promised to hold a workshop at the Re-Enchanting The City Conference on October 18. She is a noted poet and an influential teacher of poetry in Los Angeles. She will inaugurate a new section for our environmental events, that which will seek to understand the influence of Nature in the creative process. I refer you to a favorite poem of mine by Victoria Redel entitled 'To Know in this Body' (from 'Already the World by Victoria Redel, Kent State University Press, 1995). At this writing, the workshops (photography, painting, poetry) are not ready to be discussed, but we are all looking forward to them as meaningful and inspiring.

This, then, is our way of enticing you to come and be with us on our day to teach about caring for our world.

Keynote Speaker
We have Dr. Danny Harvey from the University of Toronto, who is part of the International Panel on Climate change (IPCC) and who will tell us, straight and unvarnished, about Global Warming and the consequences we are now facing.

According to Dr. Harvey, the global warming situation is grim indeed. He likens our oncoming crisis to '...the Titanic, and we have already hit the iceberg. It's a mathematical certainty that it's going to sink and we don't have enough lifeboats.' Harvey continues, 'We're on the verge of a global ecological catastrophe. The response required is urgent. We're facing a global disaster. We're on the verge of the sixth major extinction event in the history of the planet.'

We also have the Environmental Science Students from the Zoo Magnet High School who will participate in a discussion panel with Dr Harvey and then continue in a workshop where you, as participants, will ask the questions.

Also featured will be Jason Kramer, whom I got to know over a bowl of cookies in a postal shop, where I found out that Jason shares my interest in protecting the environment. Sensing a budding activist asked him if he would like to do a presentation at an environmental conference on global warming. 'Sure,' he said nonchalantly, and started pulling up relevant material on his laptop.

Jason will deliver a five minute speech at the Re-Enchanting The City Conference on Global Climate Change and the Impact Upon Wildlife and Wild Habitat, to be held at Friendship Auditorium near Griffith Park on Saturday, October 18, 2008. We are really excited about it, and we suggest that you not miss meeting this quietly determined young man.
