ITINERARY (Subject to Change)
JUNE 19 SATURDAY - Fly from LAX to Kona (may require transfer in Honolulu to inter-island flight). Pick up vans, groceries and supplies, and head to cabins in Kalopa State Park. Delicious fresh fish BBQ dinner in the rainforest.
JUNE 20 SUNDAY - Kohala Mountains rainforest: Descend 600' into Pololu Valley and continue to our camp above the beach (extra gear will be left in vans).
JUNE 21 MONDAY - Explore sections of the Kohala Ditch Trail from base camp to see some of the most spectacular coastline on Earth.
JUNE 22 TUESDAY - Exit backpack (600' gain) to trailhead and drive vans near Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park to our rooms at the Holo Holo Inn for two nights. We will stop en route for a short hike to see 420’ Akaka Falls. BBQ dinner.
JUNE 23 WEDNESDAY - Visit Thomas Jaggar Volcano Observatory. Day hikes include the Thurston Lava Tube (.3mi). This is the 27th anniversary of the eruption of Kiluea volcano. We will hike to view lava flows in the evening, conditions permitting.
JUNE 24 THURSDAY - Drive around the south side of the Big Island to a condo in Kailua Kona which will provide for our final two nights' respite in Hawai'i.
JUNE 25 FRIDAY - Snorkel the Kona coast. Our farewell ALOHA DINNER will be at a local restaurant.
JUNE 26 SATURDAY - Drive to Kona Airport for the end of the Sierra Club trip.
WHAT'S INCLUDED: MEALS: All breakfasts and dinners included (from dinner June 19 through breakfast June 26) with ALL participants helping to shop for, prepare, cook, and clean up the meals. Lunches and snacks are purchased by the participants. Grocery stores and/or eateries available when not backpacking. TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS: All ground transportation and logistics on Hawai'i is included as stated in the itinerary. Side trips, special excursions, etc., which are not on the itinerary, are not allowed. MISCELLANEOUS: 3 nights cabins, group cooking and commissary gear, admission fees, backpack stoves and fuel, water purifiers, and two nights shared rooms at condo. PRE‑TRIP MEETING: An late May, highly recommended, pre‑trip meeting, with pictures and refreshments, provides an opportunity to meet fellow participants, find a tent mate, and ask questions.
AIRLINE TICKETS: Please book your air transportation early - frequent flier seats are limited, and available seats during the summer are in high demand. Please arrange to arrive at the Kona Airport no later than 2pm on June 19, and to depart no earlier than 11am on June 26.We can suggest a travel agent. We DO NOT wait at the airport to pick up passengers from late flights and will make just ONE trip to the Kona Airport for departures the morning of Saturday, June 26, 2010. You may extend your airline return date as you do not need to fly back with the group.
CONDITIONING: Hikes vary from moderate to moderately strenuous, however they are not fast-paced (we do not race). See the current Schedule of Activities of the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter for local hiking and conditioning opportunities. All of the trip day hikes, swimming and snorkeling are optional. Moderate hikes vary from 4-6 miles and up to 1,500' gain and loss.
DOCUMENTS: Your Sierra Club number. The Hawai'i State Parks system requires a photocopy of your Drivers License for the cabin/camping permit.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Day pack, sunscreen, water bottle, mosquito repellent, ten essentials, snorkeling gear, personal items, lunches and snacks, etc. Additionally a backpack and waterproof tent (best to share). You will carry a share of the group food and equipment (4-6 lbs) on the backpack. A detailed list of items to take will be sent in May, along with a participant list so that you may arrange for a tent mate.
RESERVATIONS: Send $375 deposit ($75 is non-refundable) and three (3) large (#10) self-addressed stamped envelopes to the leader, Bill Crane, 22351 Mission Circle, Chatsworth, CA 91311-1257. *$1,245 w/SC# ($1,370 non-member) before April 1; $1,370 ($1,507 non-member) before June 1; after June 1 $1,507 ($1,658 non-member). BALANCE DUE: April 1, 2010. Make checks out to Sierra Club Backpacking Committee.
CANCELLATIONS: There is a $75 per person non-refundable processing fee. Additionally, cancellations received in writing after April 1 incur a $375 penalty; after May 3 a $622.50 penalty; after June 1 or no-shows forfeit all monies. NO EXCEPTIONS!
END OF TRIP: The Sierra Club trip ends on the morning of Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Kona Airport on Hawai'i.
