(O) Provisional Hike - Sunday, February 5, 2012
-- Towsley Canyon Hike
Come join us as we hike across some of the Santa Susana mountains and
descend into Towsley Canyon. About 7 miles with a 1000 foot elevation
gain, we will be traveling at a moderate pace. No dogs, slow pokes, or
speed demons. Leaving the
Avenue S Park & Ride
in Palmdale at 8:15am, start about 9:00am at Ed Davis Park
entrance. Rain cancels. Bring water, lunch, hiking boots, and good
spirits! Leader: Mike Wilmes, asst. Leader: Nate Krumm.
(O) Sunday, March 4, 2012 -- San
Francisquito to Tule Ridge Road
Hike with us on a part of the PCT that we don't get to very often. We'll
go west from San Francisquito Canyon toward Lake Hughes, hiking the 4
miles to Tule Ridge Road, have lunch, then return -- 8 miles round trip.
The trail ascends for about 2 miles, then levels off, with a total
elevation gain of about 1,000'. There will be views of Lake Elizabeth
and various scenic canyons on the way. Bring hiking boots, water, lunch,
& Forest Adventure Pass. Some of us may stop in at the Rock Inn in Lake
Hughes after the hike for R & R. Meet at the
Avenue S Park & Ride
before 8:30am (we'll leave promptly at 8:30), or 9:00 at the
trailhead. Leader: Ruth Gravance, Co-leader Kate Allen.
(O) Saturday, March 17, 2012 -- Hike to
Save Saddleback Park
Hike to the top of the Butte from the horse staging area on the east
side of the park. About 3 miles each way, 1000 ft of elevation gain. We
will hike on the horse trail to the path up the Butte and then to the
top from there. Return to the staging area for lunch. There will also be
an equestrian event that day - a 10 mile, 3-hour ride in the park. A
poker draw and a lunch are scheduled as part of that event, and hikers
are welcome to participate in both. Lunch (BBQ pork sandwiches and side
dishes) is $5. A poker hand is $5 + $1 for each extra card. There is a
cash prize for the winning hand - half of the poker fees taken in.
Registration/sign-in will start at 9:00 am, and the hike will
depart at 9:30 (in hopes of staying ahead of the horses, which
will leave at 10:00). Leaders: Kate Allen & Nate Krumm.
(O) Saturday, April 14, 2012 - Trails
Restoration in Angeles National Forest (Co-sponsored with the Sierra
Club Angeles Chapter Forest Committee)
Join the Forest Committee's San Gabriels Trail Crew to help restore and
maintain parts of the 500+ mile trail system in the Angeles National
Forest (final location dependent on hillside conditions). Tools and
instruction provided. Boots, gloves, long- sleeved shirts, and pants
mandatory. Hiking distances vary. Events typically run 9 am to 3 pm.
Bring lots of water, lunch, safety glasses if you have them, and
enthusiasm to work as little or as much as you want. Contact leaders by
e-mail at least a week
before for destination, meeting time and location. Ldrs: Kate Allen,
Nate Krumm.
