Monday, November 9, 2009, 7:00 P.M. - The Infamous San Andreas Fault - David Knight Lynch (PhD)
What is the San Andreas Fault? Where is it? How can I see? What does it do to the landscape? Will an earthquake make California fall into the ocean? What risks does it pose? Should I worry about it? What towns lie on the fault? When is the "big one" coming? These and many other questions about the infamous San Andreas Fault will be discussed in an all-color presentation. Topics covered include plate tectonics, continental drift, fault activity, the origin of volcanos, the geologic future of California and much more.

Prior to the main meeting, a brief Board meeting will be held at 6:30 pm. Any member of the Sierra Club is welcome to attend.

Starting at 7 p.m. there will be a planning session for future hikes. Leaders, bring your ideas and get on the calendar. If you are not a leader, but have a hike you'd like to see the group do, bring it to the meeting and we'll see what can be worked out. With the impact of the “Station Fire” on the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains, new ideas are especially welcome. We will also cover new ideas for social events and environmental activities, followed by a review of recent past trips and current Antelope Valley environment activities.

Monthly General Meetings of the Antelope Valley Group of the Sierra Club are held on the first or second Monday of the month (depending on meeting place scheduling), in the Chimbole Cultural Center, next to the Palmdale City Library on the southeast corner of Sierra Hwy & Palmdale Blvd. The general meeting begins at 7:00 pm, preceded by the Management Committee meeting.

AVEG is an informal group of individuals and representatives of various environmental organizations in our area. The next meeting will be on Monday, November 16 at 6:00pm at Butler's Coffee on the west side of 10th St. West, across from WalMart, between Avenues O-4 and O-8.
