ANTELOPE VALLEY GROUP Rep. “Buck” McKeon has recently introduced a wonderful
wilderness bill into Congress. This bill, HR 6156, “The Eastern
Sierra and Northern San Gabriel Wild Heritage Act”, will
permanently protect more than 470,000 acres of wild mountain
tops, open spaces, alpine meadows, and nearly 52 miles of wild
and scenic rivers. We, as residents of Northern Los Angeles
County, are particularly lucky that Rep. Buck McKeon has chosen
to include some of our local proposed wilderness in this vast
bill. The local areas include Piru Creek (7 miles), Magic
Mountain (13,709 acres), and Pleasant View Ridge (28,424 acres.
We applaud his leadership, as well as that of Senator Barbara
Boxer, who worked with Rep. McKeon to bring this important bill
forward. Welcome to the Antelope Valley Group of the Sierra Club. We are a regional group of the Los Angeles Chapter and represent the Sierra Club's interests in the the Antelope Valley and northern San Gabriels. Many of our activities center around exploring the valley and the San Gabriel Mountains. We hike the Angeles Forest trails, and go for wildflower walks and historical tours. The weekend may find us exploring some of the desert parks like Red Rock, Death Valley, Mojave Preserve, or Joshua Tree. Or we may be kicked back at one our annual events, like our Christmas Sunday Brunch or the potluck at Mill Creek Summit in July. Summer is the time to head for the Sierras, for weekend hikes or even week-long backpacking trips. Come join us as we explore the outdoors on foot and bicycle. Check our Get Outdoors! page for upcoming activities, or subscribe to our newsletter for the full story. Antelope Valley Group
