Protecting California wilderness has been a key mission of Sierra Club since it was founded by John Muir in 1892. Today, that mission is more urgent than ever. Over 675,000 acres of unprotected wilderness on public lands in California have been lost in the past decade due to logging, roadbuilding, abuse by off-road vehicles, and other human-caused destruction. And only one percent of California's rivers are protected from dam building and other harmful actions. Now is the time to permanently save what's left of California's wildlands and rivers!

The California Wild Heritage Campaign, of which Sierra Club is a founding member, is organizing people all over the state to support preservation of millions of acres of wildlands and hundreds of miles of wild rivers. Currently there are several bills pending in the Congress to protect new wilderness and wild and scenic rivers in California. The California Wild Heritage Act, sponsored by U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, would protect over 2.7 million acres of wilderness and 400 miles of wild and scenic rivers on National Forests and Bureau of Land Management lands throughout California. http://www.californiawild.org/Press/S2535/images/statewide_map_2003.jpg

In the House of Representatives, several bills would protect areas and rivers also in the Boxer bill.  In December 2002, just 6 months after it was introduced, one of these House bills, the Big Sur Wilderness and Conservation Act sponsored by Congressman Sam Farr, passed and was signed into law, protecting over 50,000 acres of the majestic Central Coast as Wilderness. http://www.californiawild.org/Press/2002_12_20_Farr_Bill_Signed.htm]

There are several places specifically in Southern California that need your help!  From great hiking areas in the Santa Clarita Canyons to fishing holes at Deep Creek and key habitat for Condors and Bighorn Sheep at Silver Mountain and Condor Peak, these areas provide important recreation, clean drinking water, and homes for endangered plants and animals.  Beyond the Los Angeles are places like the King Range on the North Coast, the White Mountains near the Nevada border, the Kern River in the Southern Sierra, and many more that deserve lasting protection and need your help.
