The Chapter Sustainable Population and Consumption Committee is focused on the root cause of most of our environmental problems. Too many humans consuming too many of the Earth's resources is a problem that, if not dealt with, will overrun our wild places and create pollution that technology cannot save us from.

We work on global population by advocating that the US fully fund foreign aid for family planning and women’s education and empowerment, commitments we have repeatedly made at UN conferences but not complied with. We address it domestically by calling for better government aid, both federal and state, for family planning and responsible sex education.

We address consumption by focusing on the big-impact areas of sustainable production of energy, food, and wood products. We encourage changing the US consumption model to one of a light footprint, and we offer voluntary simplicity circles for those interested. We participate in the national Sierra Club "True Cost of Food" Campaign, which encourages eating low on the food chain, organic and locally grown. We organize Club outings, both “Sustainable Tuesday” restaurant events, and trips to organic farms.
