Hiking Information
How to Get Started
This section offers Newcomer's meetings
regularly (see schedule for dates). These meetings are an opportunity to learn
more about our section and the Sierra Club, and usually include slide
presentations by a fascinating array of speakers. We also offer Newcomer Hikes
which are brief, easy-paced hikes designed to introduce you to hiking. They
require a minimum of experience and equipment. Any event designated as
"Beach Walk," "Newcomer Hike," or "Dinner Walk" is
suitable for beginners.
Basic Hiking Gear
Sunscreen, sunglasses, water/juices
(usually 2 quarts),
food, day packs/fanny packs, hiking boots, light jacket. For most hikes it is
essential you wear "lug soles" hiking boots or shoes with a good
traction. Sneakers, with good traction, are OK for Newcomer Hikes. Unless
otherwise specified, please leave all four legged animals at home. Also
prohibited--radios, televisions, cassette recorders, and firearms. A leader may
exclude a participant if he or she feels that the participant is not properly
prepared for the event i.e if the participant doesn't have any water or not
wearing hiking boots or not wearing the appropriate footwear, etc.
Choosing a Hike
If write-up specifies
"strenuous," "fast-paced," "no beginners," etc.
expect extra exercise and skill requirements. "Moderate" means
moderately strenuous. Generally, a hike of more than 6 miles and a 1,200 ft.
elevation gain is moderate and not suitable for beginners. If unsure whether you
are in condition for an activity, call the leader first. Many hikes can be
anywhere from 1/2- all day.
Adventure Pass
This pass is required for parking at
trailheads in the Angeles, San Bernardino and Los Padres forests. Cost $5/day or
$30/yr.
Classification of Event
The Sierra Club classifies activities
according to skill level required. These classifications do not relate to
strenuousness of the event.
"Why come hiking with your
group?"
It is a great way to get in
shape! On a hike you can burn 500-800 calories an hour! Also, it is a
great way to meet others and see beautiful scenery! All the hikes are free unless stated otherwise!
Hike
Cancellations/Postponement
