JUNE
JUN 5 SAT * 20s & 30s
O: NEWCOMERS HIKE: RETURN TO PARADISE COVE @ MALIBU
Summer is here so let us enjoy the salty mist of the waves cashing upon the
rocks as we walk the tidal pools of Zuma Point Dume to Paradise Cove. Always a
popular and favorite, this beginners beach hike of 4 miles and 400 ft gain
provides great scenic views of the islands and, if we are lucky, migrating
whales. So escape the heat and see why many weddings are held here in this
beautiful setting. Will love blossom? Come and find out. We will meet 9AM at the
Malibu rideshare point. Malibu Admin Ctr 23533 Civic Ctr Way. Bring 1qt water,
sunscreen, and cash for parking (thats why we are carpooling). Rain cancels.
Leaders: Regan Lau (reganL@hotmail.com) and Silvia Darie (sdarie@ucla.edu).
JUN 6 SUN * 20s & 30s
O: ANOTHER “EASY” MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE
Mountain bicycling on Highway 39 between Crystal Lake and Islip Saddle. Enjoy
dramatic scenery above the San Gabriel Wilderness on a mountain road that is
closed to traffic. Approx. 6 miles each way with gentle grade to Highway 2.
Lunch at the Eagles Roost Picnic area on Angeles Highway near the intersection
of Highway 39. Bring a helmet (required), spare tube, pump, water, and lunch.
Meet at the Azusa Rideshare at 10:00am. Leaders: Dan Taylor and Paul Shaffer.
JUN 6 SUN * 20s & 30s
O: SANTA YNEZ CANYON
Join us for a shady stroll through Santa Ynez Canyon, then a sunny climb up and
out of the canyon to the Topanga Fire Road. From there we will take a short hop
down to Trippet Ranch to eat lunch and see the visitor center. We return the
same way we came, with an optional side trip to the waterfalls. Hike is about 6
miles round trip (sans waterfalls) with a 1000’ gain. It is moderately
difficult – the trail gets a bit rocky near the top of the ridge and it can
get quite warm up there, so be prepared. Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, sunscreen
and hiking boots or lugsoles. A hat is also recommended. We will meet at 10:30
am at the trailhead. (Note: there are no rest rooms at trailhead.) From Sunset
Blvd. north of Pacific Coast Highway (1) drive north on Palisades Drive turning
left (east) on Vereda Montura to the end of the road. Rain cancels. Provisional
Ldr: Stephanie Schwartz. Co-Ldr: Jeff Breakstone.
JUN 6 SUN * 20s & 30s
O: TWIN PEAKS
Both leaders for today’s event have been traumatized by their own mini-dramas
on this hike (we’ll spare details) in the past. There does seem to be a
peculiar aura about it. Nah, just a coincidence that it shares the same name as
that short-lived, ever-so-quirky 1990s TV show but …. who knows? This hike is
on the more strenuous side; 12-13 miles distance with 3500'+ of gain in the San
Gabriel mountains. Meet 9:00am at the standard La Canada carpool point. Bring
2-3 quarts liquid minimum (yes, guys this is the summer and it’s not a walk in
the park), lunch, and hiking-style boots. Leaders: Gary Crow & Steve Han.
JUN 8 TUES
O: INFAMOUS PLAYA DEL REY CONDITIONING WALK
Days are getting longer and the sunsets are getting nicer. The warm days of
summer makes a night hike look that much better. Enjoy a walk along the beach
and the hills around Playa Del Rey. See the city above the Ballona Wetlands.
Approx. 5mi, 200 ft gain. Go W on Culver Blvd, to Nicholson, turn L and turns
into Pershing and continue to Waterview (1/2 mi), turn R to top-of-the-hill,
(corner of Rindge and Waterview). Where the NW corner fence of LAX meets the
homes overlooking the ocean. The fun starts at 7:00pm.Leaders: Russ Black &
Jeff Breakstone.
JUN 11-13 FRI-SUN * 20s & 30s
T: SAILING CRUISE TO CATALINA AND SANTA BARBARA ISLANDS
Expect brisk winds and high seas, adventurous sailing, hiking, snorkel, dinghy.
Food cost; $35 extra paid at the boat. Limited space. Send resume of sailing
experience (even if none), one large SASE, d&n phone, e-mail, along with a
check for $149) ($155 non-mem) payable to Sierra Club. Send to reserv: Dan
Clouse. Additional Leader/skipper Gary Vidor.
JUN 12 SAT * 20s & 30s / SIERRA SINGLES
O: MATILIJA FALLS
Matilija Creek leads up a canyon through beautiful pools, cascades, and water
slides. One moment the creek is just an inch deep over broad, flat, canted,
slabs of shale, the next, it’s rushing though narrow channels a few feet wide
carved deeply into the canyon. Periodically the creek spills into deep and wide
crystal clear pools before continuing downstream, repeating this scenario many
times over the course of several miles. The ultimate destination of the hike is
a very high cascading waterfall. Be sure to wear footwear and clothing (bathing
suits or hiking clothes that can double as such are highly recommended) that can
get wet, as taking advantage of the aforementioned pools for a swim is one of
the best features of this hike. The hike is 9 mi, 1,100’ gain. Some boulder
hopping and stream crossings will be encountered. Wear sturdy shoes and/or lug
sole hiking boots and bring a minimum of 3-4 quarts and lunch. Meet 9:30 AM in
Thousand Oaks at the North East corner of the K-Mart parking lot just south of
the 101 Freeway on Hampshire Road. Hampshire Road is the first exit after you
pass the Thousand Oaks Auto Mall, on your right, as you travel north (east
actually) on 101. Leaders Paul Shaffer (pcshaffer@hotmail.com), and Leen
Zwanenburg (lzwanenburg@agere.com).
JUN 12 SAT * Wilderness Adventures / 20s & 30s / HPS
I: "LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE" HIKE TO SCODIE MTN (7294')
Quote your favorite lines from these books/movies and bring your favorite
bonnet/hat (along with your other ten essentials) while walking through
wildflowers in the Southern Sierras. This is an approximately 7 mile round trip,
2300' gain hike with some trail, cross-country and rock scrambling. As well as
finding the peak, we may also locate an old cabin. For meeting time/location,
send H&W #s & recent conditioning/experience to Provisional I Leader:
Pamela Rowe playing the part of Laura. Co-Leader: David Coplen playing the part
of Charles.
JUN 12 SAT * 20s & 30s
C: Cherry Picking and Parade @ Leona Valley
It’s that time of year, which means the cherries will be ripe and bursting
with flavor. Juicy and organically grown, just be sure to leave some cherries in
your basket and not in your mouth. If you have never gone cherry picking, then
you must check out this memorable life experience. Last year, everyone had a
great time picking and tasting the various varieties of cherries. Located in
Leona Valley, it is only about an hour away. The whole town comes out for the
annual cherry parade and you will see the beauty queen and her court. We will
meet 8AM at the Laurel Plaza lot at 6180 Laurel Cyn in North Hollywood to
carpool. The building is in the lot of the Robinsons May store. Bring CASH (no
credit), water, and sunscreen. Please check the web site for any updates about
this event or contact me. Rain cancels. Leaders: Regan Lau (reganL@hotmail.com)
and Aurora Dolores.
JUN 13 SUN * 20s & 30s
O: SYCAMORE / SERRANO CANYONS
Ah, the paradoxes of modern living. Lots of people walk about town these days
talking apparently to themselves. Casual observers can get good and confused by
low-profile cell phone technology. Is that someone out walking good ol’ Sparky
talking to their dog instructionally (e.g. do your thing, and quickly) or are
they on a truly “special” wavelength with their pet? Is that scruffy
unshaven guy blissfully sauntering down the street casually LA hip and talking
to his agent or one of the too-many clinically maladjusted folks wandering about
our fine town communicating with the dark side? Hard to tell at times. We are
not however confused about the connecting-with-nature value of this 9 mile,
1200’ vertical gain hike in the Sycamore Canyon area of the Santa Monica
Mountains. In our quest to upset your lunch hour we will meet 12:30pm at the
Malibu carpool point. To reach the Malibu carpool point turn off Pacific Coast
Highway at Cross Creek Road (turn right if coming from the south, turn left from
the north/west). The Malibu pier is a good local visual landmark. After turning
on Cross Creek, make a left after one block at Civic Center Way and meet in the
Malibu Civic Center parking lot. Bring 1-2 quarts liquid and hiking boots. There
is poison oak on some stretches of today’s hike as a minor warning. Leaders:
Gary Crow & Veronique Pascal.
JUN 13 SUN * 20s & 30s
