APRIL 19-21              FRI (evening)-SUN
O:  Rosarito-Ensenada 50 Mile Bike Ride

Over 10,000 people participate annually in this the largest cycling event of the west coast.  Cyclists cruise south along the rugged Baja California, Mexico coastline on the free road (Mexico 1) beside the beautiful Pacific Ocean on what are mostly small rolling hills. The exception is a 2 mile climb up El Tigre or what many just call 'THE HILL'.   After the race the cyclists and friends participate in a huge fiesta (30,000 people total).  It's not exactly a peaceful weekend of whale watching, but it should be a lot of fun.  You're responsible for getting to the border by 7 PM on Friday (names of carpool volunteers will be posted), but once you're at the border a shuttle bus service will take you and your bike to Ensenada and to the trip starting line Saturday morning.  Accommodations will be provided Friday and Saturday night in Ensenada.  We'll head back Sunday afternoon.  The cost of this event is between $114 and $278 depending on room options and whether or not you take the bus.  Meals and drinks are not included.  No refunds will be given for cancellations after March 15 unless a suitable replacement can be found.  Hard core cyclists are welcome, but those who just want to try and complete the course can hang back with the leader.  (Expect to see me walking my bike up El Tigre.)  For more information check out the leader's trip website at http://www.mexicohiking.com.  For reservations contact leader MIKE DOBBLES at mdobbles@yahoo.com. The co-leader is SAM RAMIREZ.

C: TWILIGHT TOUR AT EXOTIC FELINE BREEDING COMPOUND & POT LUCK BBQ

These 'twilight tours' are held three times a year and are the times only the compound is open in the evening when the cats are much more active. Cat lovers who discover this desert zoo north of Los Angeles are surprised and amazed at the variety of wild cat species here. With over 60 feline residents comprised of 14 different species including tigers, jaguars and leopards, this is an evening everyone is sure to enjoy.  There is a raffle, a bake sale sponsored by FCC's American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) chapter, and other surprises -- goldfish in the fishing cat ponds, watermelons for the tigers, a snake or raptor exhibit, cubs out on leashes -- there's something different every time, and of course lots of beautiful cats to see, hear, and photograph. Also, visitors can wander around parts of the compound that are not open to visitors during the day because Twilight Tours are restricted to adults only. A special photo opportunity with one of the friendlier cats is a Twilight Tour highlight -- you can have your photo taken with a cat (if one is cooperating). (www.cathouse-fcc.org) Admission is $15 per person and includes full camera/video privileges for that night. We will meet at Frank's house (less than a block from the freeway) at 4:30pm then carpool to the compound. After the tour we will all head back to Frank's place for an optional pot luck barbecue. Directions: Take the I-5 freeway north to the 14 (Antelope Valley) freeway. Exit at 20th Street West. Turn left on 20th Street West to Avenue J-8. Turn right on J-8 to 21st Street West. APRIL 28        SUN        20'S & 30'S
O: SANTA PAULA CANYON

We respect nature's laws.  Drop a cat and it's a near certainty it will land on its feet.  And dropped toast in one of life's minor cruelties tends to land with buttered side faced down, does it not?  Gravity is something you don't want to mess with.  With this in mind the event leaders recommend when gearing up for this 8 mile, 1000 foot gain hike in the Los Padres forest that you dispense with those gravity-defying ultra low-riding baggy pants that seem to embody urban cool. Not too cool, though entertaining for the group, making a spectacle of yourself with a face-plant on the trail.  Meet 9:00am at the Sylmar carpool point (Encinitas Ave, just south of Roxford St; take Roxford exit off 5 freeway, just north of where the 405 freeway merges into the 5 freeway, in the north San Fernando Valley).  The hike location is near Ojai and Santa Paula.  Bring 2 quarts liquid, lunch, and hiking-style boots.  Leaders: GARY CROW & ANNE KIRKPATRICK
