JUL 11 SUN * 20s & 30s
O: MT. ABEL / MT. PINOS

Some people find comfort and a certain sense of elitism being at the apex of the food chain. No fun being the hunted. Rather interesting though that humans share 60% of their DNA with a banana – not so far removed! It also turns out in the scheme of things slime molds and mushrooms by virtue of reproductive technique are more closely related to humans than plants. I knew there was more than a passing reason a couple of friends called me a fungus during my college days. Scientific minutiae aside, for those who want to notch reaching the apex of the Los Padres forest join us on this hike today of 9 miles and 2200 feet of vertical gain. Meet 9:00am at the Sylmar carpool point (Encinitas Ave, just south of Roxford St; take Roxford exit off 5 freeway, just north of where the 405 freeway merges into the 5 freeway, in the north San Fernando Valley). Bring 2 quarts liquid, lunch, and hiking-style boots. Leaders: Gary Crow & Steve Han.

Go W on Culver Blvd, to Nicholson, turn L and turns into Pershing and continue to Waterview (1/2 mi), turn R to top-of-the-hill, (corner of Rindge and Waterview). JUL 24 SAT * 20s & 30s
O: IDYLLWILD / MT. SAN JACINTO AREA

There are these items called the “10 Essentials” that “prudent” hikers are supposed to carry when out on the trail to handle any old eventuality. Trouble is they take up so damn much space in the daypack, and are heavy to boot. Then, we feel put to shame by these driven-to-achieve kids (hmmm, could be driven-to-achieve parents?!?) lugging around daypacks at school that look to be half as large as the aspiring student. If you don’t mind risking being with underachieving leaders that carry, yes, a few items nigh of those essential 10 then consider checking out our hike extending 8-10 miles and 2500 feet of vertical gain above the quaint town of Idyllwild. Meet 9:00am at the East San Gabriel Valley rideshare point in the Albertson’s parking lot (2630 E Workman Ave) at the Eastland Shopping Center, off the Citrus Ave exit, just north of the 10 freeway in West Covina. Bring 2 quarts of liquid, lunch, and lugsole boots. Leaders: Gary Crow & Dan Taylor.

Turn left (north) at the first light (Altadena Drive) and go 1.6 miles to the park entrance. From the 210 Freeway westbound, exit at San Gabriel Boulevard/San Marino. Turn right (north) at the second light (Altadena Drive) and go 1.5 miles to the park entrance. Bring water, hat, and sunglasses.
