In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make voluntary carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them. Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.

AUG 2 MON * 20s & 30s
O: FULL MOON CONDITIONING HIKE - NEWCOMERS WELCOME

Let's start the week with this 3-4 mile rt, 400ft hike above Getty
Museum in the Santa Monica Mountains. We'll have spectacular views of
Westwood and Santa Monica draped in gold at sunset, and may even get a
glimpse of the ocean if the day is clear. Bring a snack, water,
sunscreen. Sneakers are OK. The trailhead is at the end of the Mountain
Gate Drive just off the 405 fwy in the Bel Air area. Free street
parking. ( From SF Valley, take 405fwy south, exit at Skirball Center
Dr/Mullholland Dr., go 0.2 mi, then R on Skirball Ctr. Dr. then L on
Sepulveda Blvd for 0.6mi. Right on Mountain Gate Dr. for 1.1 mi. From
Westwood, take 405 fwy. North, exit at Getty Center Dr, go 0.2 mi to
Sepulveda Bld. Left on Sepulveda for 1.6 mi, then Left on Mountain Gate
Dr. Drive to the end of Mountain Gate Dr.). Meet at the trailhead at 7
pm. Rain or heat over 90 F cancels. Leaders: Silvia Darie and Russ Black.

O: PIZZA & WINE HIKE @ STUDIO CITY

Back by popular demand with more pizza than ever. Lets celebrate summer
with a taste of Italy. Who said a hike has no reward? This 4 mile 600ft
gain RT beginners hike has beautiful views of the Valley as we visit the
home of the mysterious Tree People. Here we will dine like Romans in a
hidden outdoor amphitheatre nestled among the trees, as we socialize and
feast on pizzas and drink the nectar of the gods...wine. Some of you
will remember how nice that theatre was. Bring $5 (if you want lotsa
different pizzas), your favorite bottle of wine with cups to share,
water, sunscreen, or your own lunch if don't want to participate. Rain
postpones. Wilacre Park is located on the NW corner of Laurel Canyon and
Fryman in Studio city. 3431 Fryman Rd Studio City, CA 91604. We will

O: SIERRA MADRE TO ORCHARD CAMP

The hike is 7 miles round trip with 2000' elevation gain. We will start
with a rather steep climb up Little Santa Anita Canyon on the Mt. Wilson
Trail, eventually crossing a ridge and dropping down into a shaded live
oak forest. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, hiking-style boots, and
snack. And be prepared for changes in temperature, as it can be hot on
the climb up to the ridge and much cooler in the forest area. Meet 8 am
at the corner of Mira Monte Ave and Mt Wilson Trail Dr in Sierra Madre.

O: LAKE HOLLYWOOD SOCIAL WALK (BEGINNER/NEWCOMER HIKE)

If you've done the hike to the Hollywood sign with me, you've seen a
beautiful lake/reservoir below with pine trees around it. Now we are
going to walk around this easy lake! This walk has no elevation gain and
is 3.2 miles around. Hence, DO NOT bring hiking boots! Bring comfortable
shoes. Dogs are not allowed! This walk will take between 1-1.5 hours.
Meet at 4 pm. From the 101 Freeway, get off Barham (if you are coming
from LA get off Barham and/or Universal Studios exit & go down(left) the
hill & make a left at Cahuenga) and drive toward LA on Cahuenga
(Hollywood) and get on Barham. From Barham Blvd. (Thomas Guide 563 D7),
take Lake Hollywood Dr., all the way up the hill, passing Wonderview
Dr.., go down the hill, and park. Meet at the 1st entrance you see
(gate). Toyon Tanks (gate) are across the street. Thomas Guide 563 E7.
Rain postpones. Bring water. Afterwards we will meet at In-N-Out Burger

C: STARLIGHT BOWL

Join me for a Sunday evening under the stars at Burbank's Starlight Bowl
to hear Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone and the Answer. Herman's
Hermits outsold every recording act in the world including the Beatles
in 1965. The Answer is the House Band of Arrow 93 and they will play a
variety of classic rock. Starlight Bowl is an outdoor concert venue. We
will gather for a potluck picnic at 5:15 PM. Bring food to share and a
blanket/lawn chair. The gates to the Starlight Bowl open at 5:30 PM and
the concert starts at 6:30 PM. Parking is $5 and admission is $7. (Note
that it is stack parking and it fills up early. If you have friends
nearby that want to come, it's best to carpool.) Meet on the lawn just
below the ticket booth at 5:15 PM. I will have a sign that says "Sierra

O: PLAYA DEL REY CONDITIONING WALK

The weather is changing and the days are getting warmer. It's time to
enjoy a weekday evening hike in Playa Del Rey. Come on by enjoy a 4 to 5
mile walk along the beach and hills around Playa Del Rey. Enjoy the
night lights of the city and neighborhood. Approx. 5mi, 200 ft gain. Go
W on Culver Blvd, to Nicholson, turn L and turns into Pershing and
continue to Waterview (1/2 mi), turn R to top-of-the-hill, (corner of
Rindge and Waterview). Where the NW corner fence of LAX meets the homes
overlooking the ocean. The fun starts at 7:00pm.

AUG 15 SUN * 20s & 30s
O: TREKKING AND EXPLORING ROLLING HILLS ESTATES IN PV

Please join in the discovery with two veteran leaders on the section's
first expedition into Rolling Hills Estates in Palos Verdes. The trek is
a slow-moderate 3 hour hike covering 6.5 miles with very little gain.
Bring 2 qrts water, hat, lugsoles, etc. Meet 9:00 am at Ernie Howlett
Park on west side of Hawthorne Blvd. between PCH and PV Drive north:
South Bay area. Take 405 Fwy S, exit at Hawthorne Blvd., go south. The
park is on the right-hand side, after Rolling Hills Road. The park has lots of
free parking, look for a Sierra Club green flag on top of my car. Try to
meet at the North end of the park. After hike we'll go and eat at
Hank's. PCH and a white face cliff are the major landmarks. Behind the
white cliff is where the park is located. No tigers or pets. Rain, Giant

O: ZUMA BEACH HAWAIIAN POTLUCK PARTY, STROLL TO POINT DUME AND PAMELA'S
BIRTHDAY

Let's go play in the water and sun! It's about time we dust off the
volleyball net and give it a try at this Hawaiian Beach Party
Extravaganza to celebrate Pamela's birthday, and give her a proper send
off for her "I" backpack trip. We'll party 'till low tide (if possible),
then take a stroll to Point Dume. Bring Speedo's and bikinis, sneakers,
hat and sunscreen, towel, and 2 quarts water for the hike and the
binoculars (for wildlife spotting only, of course) ; ) Bring food for
potluck (last name A-C: bring appetizers, D-F: beverages, G-K:
salads/veggies/fruits, L- R: main course, S-Z: desserts). We'll have the
cake. Meet at 4:45PM at the Malibu rideshare point. Malibu Admin Ctr
23533 Civic Ctr Way. Bring cash for parking (that's why we are
carpooling). Bring your beach toys. (Ron, you may bring your surfboard).

T: SAILING CRUISE TO SANTA CRUZ ISLAND SEA CAVES AND ANACAPA ISLAND

Explore the islands, enjoy challenging hands-on sailing, hiking,
snorkeling. spelunking, dinghy. Food expense; $35 additional paid at the
boat. Limited space. Send resume of sailing experience (even if none),

O: EVENT PLANNING RETREAT AT HARWOOD LODGE

Leaders and other young Sierrans with ideas for outings: You have lots
of ideas about events you want to do, I know. Harwood, our Mt Baldy
hideaway lodge, is the place you want to be this weekend to share your
ideas with your fellow leaders!!! We’ll dedicate this weekend outing to
planning events and exotic trips and share ideas. You’ve already
reserved a campground? Wonderful! We’d love to hear about it. You want
to run a trip but don’t know were to start? Will have experts to help
you Bring your calendars to start scheduling your outings. Hey, we’ll
even run this weekend like an outing, all to benefit your learning….
We’ll provide happy hour, dinner and breakfast on Sunday and we will all
help to set up and clean up… Just like a real outing! We’ll even let you
run the kitchen, to give you the full leading experience We'll barter
beer for event write-ups during happy hour. Multi day trips have highest
exchange value!!! We'll bring camping and trip experts to share their
wisdom with us, if available. We may even take short hikes around
Harwood if our busy barter schedule allows Leaders’ food and lodging
bill is on us!!! Non leaders’ fee is $15 for food expenses. Lodging is
$9 for Sierra Club members and $12 if not a member; the lodging fee is
separate and is paid to the lodge overseer. Bring your membership cards!
Bring sleeping bag and personal stuff. Can camp outside if you'd rather.
We’ll respect the other Harwood visitors, if any. It's open weekend.
We'll respect the Harwood rules of no electrical instruments, no radios,

Mt. Baldy at 6000ft elevation, 15 miles north of Claremont. E-mail us

O: VINCENT GAP TO MT BADEN – POWELL (9399’)

Join us on this 8 mile hike with 2800’ of elevation gain. As we will be
hiking to the top of the second highest peak in the San Gabriel’s this
hike is probably not suitable for your first, second, or maybe even your
third hike. On the other hand, the views from the top will definitely
make all that huffing and puffing worth it! One of the leaders, his
initials are P.S. (a long time ago), actually tried it for his first
hike and speaks from personal experience. Hike start is 1 hour drive
from the carpool point. Bring an absolute minimum 3 quarts water, lunch,
and hiking style boots. Meet at 9:00 at the La Canada car pool point
(Angeles Crest Highway, just N of the 210 fwy. Park on Angeles Crest
only). Leaders may bring their well behaved dogs. Leaders: Doug Murray

AUG 21-22 SAT-SUN Hundred Peaks, 20s & 30s
I: PAMELA'S BIRTHDAY BACKPACK TO CORNELL PEAK (9750'), JEAN PEAK
(10,670') AND MARION MTN (10,320')

Two of these peaks were named after the true loves of Edmund Taylor
Perkins, Jr ... while we may not find our true love this weekend, we
will have fun enjoying nature & celebrating my 35th birthday. After we
take the Palm Springs tram ($21 round trip), we'll hike to Round Valley
Camp and then to Cornell Peak for a total of 4 miles, 1400' gain (trail
& xc). We'll continue our journey on Sunday with the remaining two peaks
(depending on conditions) for 4 miles, 2000' gain (trail & xc). Party
hats and favors optional. Permit limits group size so reserve early.

AUG 24 TUES * 20s & 30s
O: SANTA MONICA CYN CONDITIONING WALK

If you’re like me, you just love Russ’s Playa Del Rey Conditioning Walk,
but are bummed that you have to wait a month for it to roll around
again. So let’s go out on a new urban walk that meets on the Tuesday two
weeks following Russ’s ramble, a 4-mile walk around Santa Monica Canyon.
After a beach warm-up walk we will take a stroll through the winding
streets of Santa Monica Canyon, look at the houses, visit Rustic Canyon
Park, and climb a few staircases as well. Be warned – we will end this
walk by climbing the infamous 4th Street steps. There are 189 steps so
only come if you can handle this. We will meet at 6:45pm at the park at
San Vicente and Ocean Avenue, and promptly leave at 7pm. Rain cancels.

O: BEACH BIKE RIDE III

Hit the beach trail before the summer ends by joining us on this ride
from MDR down to the South Bay. This is a moderately paced approx. 20
mile ride, leader's choice of routes. Bring a helmet (required), spare
tube, water, and $ for optional lunch. Meet 10 am at Dock 52 parking lot
in Marina Del Rey, on Fiji Way about 1/2 mile west of Lincoln. Leaders:
Steven Han & Jeff Breakstone.

AUG 28-29 SAT-SUN * Sierra Singles / 20s & 30s
O: DINKY CREEK/SHAVER LAKE CARCAMP

Enjoy lakeside views, water sports, & deluxe happy hours at a private,
forested campground east of Fresno on a tributary of the King's River.
Options include conducted tour (1000' underground) of environmentally
friendly power plant, dayhike to glaciated Dinky Creek, swimming,
fishing, boating (add'l. fees not included). Bring swimsuit, tent,
sleeping bag, and other standard carcamping creature comforts. Arrive
after 4 PM Friday, depart by noon Sunday. Limited onsite parking. To
